Week 3- Y4(Mar 30th to Apr 5th)
Wednesday: This winter, a state-of-the-art recording studio was built at our Iksan campus. This is great, because t means that all of us teachers can now record for a very very low price! (We only have to pay the technician a little bit) Also, we can record student projects (like my jazz choirs when I write new arrangements, or Ben's percussion ensemble), and the students can use it to record a CD in place of doing a graduation recital if they choose to. So all of this is pretty awesome. What wasn't awesome was that I had to stay late in Iksan tonight to test out the new studio with all of the professors! I walked in after I finished 4 straight hours of teaching, already exhausted, and I found that not only the recording engineer and the professors were there, but a big group of students and other people who were there to observe! Doesn't make for the most comfortable recording situation . . . also, the headphones in each of the booths weren't working as well as they should have been, and it was really really difficult for everyone to hear eachother (everyone was in their own booth, and the sight lines were a little cut off, so we couldn't really see eachother either). Anyway, for me, it was mostly a lot of sitting around and waiting, and then I recorded a couple of songs and sat around and waited some more. Then Jae wanted all of us to go to dinner, so we all had to go for samgyeopsal. Politically in Korea, when your boss wants to do something, even if it's social and therefore should be optional; you don't say no! Even though Jae is pretty relaxed, there are still some unwritten rules when it comes to "team mentality". In any case, Kenji, Chang Hyun and I all needed to catch the bus back to Seoul, so we only had an hour to spend at dinner anyway. I got back to Seoul around 12:30am, having missed a dinner party that my roommates were throwing for our friends, and crawled into bed utterly exhausted!
Thursday: I wasn't going to go out tonight, but Summer talked me into going to Ladies Night at Bricx-- free drinks for the girls until midnight! Didn't last too long though-- work tomorrow!
Friday: I was totally excited today when my older student cancelled, but then I was irritated when she asked to reschedule-- I said that I didn't have any available slots, which was true, and she texted back and said Really? Not even 11:30am? And she kept on pushing and pushing . . . again, frustration that students here don't seem to understand that I don't exist ONLY to teach them! Another Grateful Dead rehearsal tonight, and then a movie night at my place with Bobby, Nate and Garan. It's pretty awesome to have a place that is good for having people over!
Saturday: At salsa tonight, we started choreographing a big performance piece-- at the end of June, the whole intermediate class is going to do a routine together--8 couples! I'm excited, but also really hoping that everyone will pull together enough to make it look really good. After salsa, I had to run right to my Grateful Dead gig. The gig was at a bar called Stompers, which, believe or not is right at the top of Hooker Hill (hooker in the literal sense!) Now why anyone would open a non-hooker bar on the top of Hooker Hill is beyond me, but Stompers regularily has live music, and moreover, they actually pay their bands decent wages. The place was packed with crazy Deadheads once again (it still makes me giggle a little bit when I think about the fact that I of all people am singing in a Grateful Dead tribute band!). I was really happy to see that the Puerto Rican guy, Dary, that I met last weekend came out to see me. Unfortunately, his friends really wanted to go to Caliente, so they left after the first set. I was intending to meet up with him at Caliente after the gig, but the gig didn't finish til 2am! Damn! We're going to try to work something out for next week . . .
