Week 3- Y3(Mar 25th to Mar 31st)
Sunday: Ugh. I just remembered why I hate soju.
Tuesday: One of my students was in an accident today-- he's okay, but his scooter is destroyed and there's going to be some problems with the other driver paying the insurance. When are people going to learn how to driver safely here? How many accidents does it take? Naturally, my student couldn't come for his lesson, so I'll have to come in on Friday for a makeup lesson. One thing I didn't count in this semester-- swimming in administrative work. I spend so much friggin time at the photocopier I might as well pitch a tent. May have to get myself a teaching assistant soon . . .
Wednesday: I'm a little worried about my first improv students in Seoul-- I suspect there could be some attitude problems in the future, but we'll have to wait and see. I went to my second salsa class tonight and didn't have quite as much fun as the first time-- I got stuck with this really weird Korean guy the whole time. Not only did he smell all sweaty and gross, but he really really could not dance his way out of a paper bag. There are not words to express how terrible he is. My poor toes . . . And of course-- by the end of the class he had decided that he had a crush on me, despite the fact that I was kind of bitchy and bossy towards him. Aagh! I'm learning that the "fun factor" in salsa is seriously dependent on your partner.
Friday: After my makeup teaching today, Jae called a meeting for some of the professors (specifically the ones who speak English!). As I've probably mentioned, my college has a relationship with Humber College in Toronto-- if our students get into Humber, they can transfer right into 3rd year. However, Humber College administration is causing some slowdowns for us-- despite the fact that this program has been in place for 2 years, they are only now deciding that the elective courses at PaekChe aren't good enough to act as transfer credits for their elective courses. They want the FULL course outlines for all of these electives so that they can decide if our transfer students need to take them again in Canada. Lame! Why are they only deciding this now? Anyway, what it boils down to is Jae, Won Sool, Chang Hyun, and Oak Young have to translate the course outlines for all the elective courses, and Kenji and I have to grammar check/fix the wording (Ben's still in Montreal at the moment). And . . . it has to be done by Monday. BOO!
Saturday: So Joe is back, and settled into an apartment close to Guro Station in Seoul. We met up in the Hongdae area tonight with some of his friends from the winter camp he taught at. It seems like foreigners always pick the worst bars here-- his friends wanted to go the bar that I hate the most, Tin Pan-- it smells like old socks, looks about the same, and is really no more than a greasy meat market. Fortunately we didn't stay for long before his friends decided that they wanted to go to a hip-hop club. By this point, Moon Youn, a Korean girl that Joe met while travelling in Thailand had joined us. We did get dragged into the hop-hop club, which turned out to be cheesy and lame, but Moon Youn, Joe and I bailed pretty soon after in search of more chill atmospheres. Moon Youn took us to this really cool Korean-style bar, where you sit on thick cushions on the carpeted floor around mother-of-pearl inlaid tables. In the middle, there's a really pretty little pond-- very relaxed and very chilled out, kind of like hanging out in a good friend's basement. Loved it! And loved Moon Youn-- there are very few Koreans who have the "travelling spirit", but she's definitely got it. Her next trip starts on Monday-- she's going to Israel, Egypt and Jordan! I'm pretty jealous . . .
