Week 3 - Y2 (Mar 19th to Mar 25th) |

Tuesday March 21st,I saw some good improvements with the vocal jazz
ensembles today-- better attitudes, faster learning.
I am getting tired of riding the bus down to Jeonju
two days a week-- the bus ride is so long, and the
seats are so uncomfortable! I'm developing a
permanent backache.

Wednesday March 22nd, I really miss playing with people. I realize that I'm
surrounded by jazz musicians now, but it's actually
really hard to meet up with the other teachers--
everyone's schedules are so different. I hope that I
can start working out some jam sessions soon-- it's
been more than a year since I've played jazz with
other people!

Thursday March 23rd, Today was the first of the improv tests. It went both
good and bad. The second and the third classes
actually absorbed a great deal of information during
my lecture (much more than I thought they were
getting), and some of them surprised me with good
melodic developement, good rhythm, etc. But the first
class . . . they were disastrous. And they were the
ones who I thought had understood the lecture the
best! I was also really upset to find a lot of
absences in the third class. I had warned them
specifically that if they weren't there for their
performance tests, that they would get zero. And yet
6 students from the third class were missing for their
performance tests. What hurt the most was that 4 of
them are my private students as well. I guess I have
to remember that I'm dealing with college-age students
now, who are only learning now how to take
responsibility for their own educations. I guess it's
not really my problem if they want to take the zero
instead of trying.
A friend from Daegu was supposed to come up tonight,
but had to cancel because he's sick. I was kind of
disappointed-- I really haven't met very many people
in Seoul yet. So instead, I went to the (sort-of)
Jamaican place in Itaewon and got (sort-of) jerk
chicken.

Saturday March 25th, Today I went on the hunt for a new cell phone.
Kwang-youn, the student who lives in my building, took
me out to help me find a new one-- they're more
expensive than I realized! Anyway, I didn't even end
up getting one yet, because it's Saturday, so I have
to wait til Monday (but still have to give my old
phone to Ryan and Lindsey this weekend-- it's in my
old director's name). But the woman who owns the shop
we were in just happens to be Kwang-youn's aunt, and
as we were leaving, she stuffed a wad of cash into his
hand, and told him to take me out for lunch. I really
can't complain about free galbi lunches . . . Also,
she's going to give a little discount on the phone.
So later in the afternoon, I got on the train for
Daegu. I met the crew at Ariana's, the
all-you-can-drink and eat for 15,000 won brew house in
Daegu. Not really worth the money ultimately-- the
beer sucks, and the live band is even worse. Oh well.
