Tuesday Sept 19th,
Tonight was the Brad Mehldau concert in Seoul. He's a
pretty famous jazz pianist, and he came with Larry
Grenadier on bass, and Jeff Ballard on drums. Kwon
Hyun had to help me get the tickets, cause on the
Korean ticket websites, you need to have a Korean
credit card. Anyway, the show was really good, and I
had never seen Brad Mehldau live, so it was cool that
I got to see a great show in Seoul. |

Wednesday Sept 20th,
A strange turn of events-- one of my students, Eun Mi
has very suddenly and without warning dropped out of
school. She didn't show up to choir or her lesson
today, and I was kind of worried, but I got a text her
from her saying that she would email later. She
didn't. Then I learned from another student that she
had suddenly quit. Eun Mi is the student who emailed
me all summer telling me how much she missed me and
how much she couldn't wait to come back to our
lessons. Eun Mi is the one who told me she wanted to
audition for Berklee. Eun Mi is the one that gave me
beautiful silver earrings for teacher's day. She was
one of my most dedicated students. I don't understand
what happenned. I emailed her, saying I was worried
about her, and as of yet I have not heard anything
back from her.

Thursday Sept 21st,
I apparently have the worst luck with students from
other departments of PaekChe. For the past couple
weeks on the bus, I've been stuck sitting next to Ja
Young, a violin student, who talks incessantly, and
has been devoting all of her energy towards converting
me to Mormonism. Then tonight on the bus . . .
everything started fine. The bus was empty enough
that I could have my own seat. But then we stopped
halfway at a reststop, and this ridiculous musical
theatre student plopped down beside me and handed me a
coffee that he had bought for me. He proceeded to be
annoying, ignorant and relatively rude (I think
unintentionally) for the remainder of the trip, and
since we got stuck in terrible traffic, it was a long
trip. Then he followed me to my subway stop and
insisted on taking me out to dinner, thus prolonging
my torture, all the while having to listen to him talk
about my "bodyline" and how "beautiful" I am, and how
impressed he is that I've managed to learn how to read
Korean in the frickin year and a half that I've lived
here, not to mention that, ooh, surprise surprise,
I've mastered the use of chopsticks. Also, apparently,
I'm too weak to handle carrying my own "very heavy"
purse, because I'm such a delicate, weak girl. Barf.
It seems pretty ridiculous to me that students from
other departments seem to think that they can hang out
with me like I'm their friend just because I'm white,
and I look young. No one's falling all over the other
professors. They get treated with respect and
distance. Maybe some people are confused because I
look so young, but still, that doesn't give some lame
students the right to invade my privacy.

Friday Sept 22nd,
Today Saoh and I met so that he could give me the
Sergio Mendes tickets. Again, it was quite a
laborious task for him to get them-- he ended up
having to speak directly to the promotors, and they
ended up having to print up more tickets, so we had to
sit around and wait for them to deliver them to the
school. What a pain.
Tonight, Ryan and Lindsey came into Seoul. Lindsay's
mom is coming to visit tomorrow! So I picked them up
from the train station, and we headed to a cool bar
that I recently discovered in Itaewon, called Bar
Nana. It's a really funky chilled out place, with low
seating and cushions and cool art work; plus they
always have good djs, and sometimes live music. We
ended up having quite a session . . .

Saturday Sept 23rd,
Somehow we managed to get out of bed by 10am, and drag
ourselves back to Itaewon for a Western style
breakfast (Ryan and Lindsey have been looking forward
to this since the last time they visited me in Seoul!)
Unfortunately, I stupidly forgot my cell phone at
home, and thus missed my parents' weekly Saturday
morning phone call-- sorry Mom and Dad! Since Itaewon
is the only place in Korea that consistenly carries
large and tall sizes, we did some shopping for Ryan
(and maybe a little bit for Lindsey and I too!) By
5pm, they had to leave for the airport, to meet
Lindsey's mom, aunt and cousins, who will be staying
in Korea for 2 weeks (god, it must feel great to have
visitors. I can't wait for mine this year! Which
reminds me-- Steph from Canada, who toured Japan with
last summer, is going to be in Hong Kong this December
and January, so I'll probably start my trip a little
early and go see her in Hong Kong, and then she may
join me on part of the trip!)
At 9pm, Joe and Greg got in from Daegu. They didn't
want to go as far as Hongdae, so we ended up back in
Itaewon (I've spent way too much time there this
weekend) for a few drinks, but we managed to get back
to my place at a relatively respectable hour. My
apartment has seen a lot of traffic this weekend!
