Week 28- Y3(Sep 16th to Sep 22nd)
Monday:Next week is Chuseok, which is like KoreanThanksgiving, ie the second most important holiday onthe Korean calendar. It's also the worst time totravel in Korea-- trains are booked months in advance, traffic is absolutely hellish, etc. Anyway, Chuseok is from Monday to Wednesday, but Ijust found out that I get the whole week off! Nice!
Wednesday:I started one more private student today-- last one, really! This one is actually a little bit weird-- atthe hagwon, I have an older male student named Ho. He's maybe in his mid-fifties. Anyway, he wanted toput his youngest daughter (age 13) in lessons, butbecause she's in high school, she can only takeprivate lessons from me. She has potential, but it'sbeen so long since I've worked with anyone youngerthan 18, that I've forgotten how horribly awkwardteenage girls can be! I don't think she's terriblyinterested in studying voice-- it looks like Ho iskind of pushing her into it. Reminds of teachingpiano to kids in Canada-- I had hoped that I wouldn'tfind myself having to teach students who weren'treally interested again, but I guess I have to make anexception here . . .
Friday:I had to come in today to do one makeup lesson. Thiswas for the private that I started last week, Sage--the one who is almost blind but quite talented. Sagespeaks English incredibly well, and is a pleasure toteach and today, out of the blue, he offered to tutorme in Korean! I was pretty excited, because I've beenhalf-assedly looking for a tutor for awhile, andfinally one just kind of fell into my lap. Sofinally, my Korean speaking is going to startimproving . . .
Saturday:I spent most of my day at the dance studio-- Joey andHelen are really trying to boost up the abilities ofthe intermediate class, so I decided to come to theSaturday class as well. Too many students! I likeour small little Wednesday class better. I stayed onto help out with the beginner class a little bit, andthen for the practise party as well. Turns out Helenwants to raise the skill level, because she wants tohave kind of a performance/recital-ish thing soon. Mypartner will be Andy, a Korean guy who is one of thebetter dancers at the studio, and a good height matchfor me. (I also suspect that she's trying to set usup).Afterwards, I went to meet Nate and Trevor (the guysI've been jamming with) and friends to watch Garan'sother band play at Woodstock. Andy came along withme. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that theband was pretty tight! I guess I've beenunder-estimating the quality of foreign music in Seoulquite a bit . . . Anyway, i ended u being a reallyreally fun (and really late) night, with lots of greatpeople around.
