Week 25- Y3(Aug 26th to Sep 1st)
Monday:First day of the semester. For me, that meantdragging my tired, sleep-deprived self out of bed at7am, and getting on the bus down to Iksan. Of course,as per usual, the schedule isn't quite finished yet,and my ensembles haven't been finalized, so I didn'tactually have any teaching to do today! However, Idid find out who my private students will be, and I'mquite pleased-- only 5 students ( I guess theyrealized that they were working me into the groundlast semester, and decided to give me a break!), andall of them are smart, hardworking and interested injazz! No slackers this semester . . .
Tuesday:Jang Mi, one of my private students, couldn't cometoday because she had Lasik eye surgery yesterday, andthere is some trouble with her recovery! The surgeryis cheaper here than it is in North America, but is itworth it, considering the pain that Jang Mi iscurrently in?
Wednesday:I enjoy the second semester of the year so much more--all the deadweight has dropped out, my class sizes aresmaller, I get better private students, and betterensembles . . . if only the first semester could belike this too.
Friday:My makeup lessons for the hagwon are finally finished, and starting next week, I can claim my Fridays back! However, there won't be much time for fun thisweekend-- most of it will be spent writing andtranscribing music for my jazz choirs. The school hasa small repertoire of charts, most of which are cheesyand easy, but there are no appropriately easy chartscomprised of solid material. Now at most schools, Iwould be given some kind of a budget for purchasingmusic, but somehow I doubt that there's a budget forthat here, since all the charts we have were notactually paid for. So . . . it makes the most sensefor me just to write new charts for my choirs. Thatway I can make sure that they're tasteful, and thatthe level is appropriate, plus no one has to worryabout copyright laws (not that anyone ever worriesabout copyright laws in Korea anyway-- no one has anyqualms about ripping things off the internet, borrowing passages of songs, buying pirated DVDs offthe street). Unfortunately, writing so many chartsdoesn't bode well for my social life for the nextcouple of weeks . . .
Saturday:This weekend, the Flow Festival is taking place aboutan hour outside of Seoul. It's basically a musicfestival catered towards foreigners that featuresKorean and foreign bands. Nicole and the Busan crowdare coming up for it, and invited me along, but theonly option is to stay overnight in a homestay kind ofsituation, and I couldn't afford that much time awaythis weekend, so sadly I had to say no. However, wedid get to have lunch today before they got on the busto the festival-- middle eastern food at Petra. It'sbeen ages since I've seen Nicole, and some of theother Busan people, so it was good to catch up. Nowthat Ange is no longer in Busan, there isn't muchreason for me to go down (especially since I kind ofhate Busan, and bad things always seem to happen whenI go), so I've got to take the opportunity to hang outwith Nicole wherever it arises!
