Saturday:Tonight I met up with Dion. He's a Kiwi who is afriend of a friend, and he's just recently come toKorea to teach English. Not knowing anyone in Seoul,he contacted me several months ago for advice aboutjobs, lifestyle, so on, and a couple months ago, heaccepted a job in Gwacheon, just outside of Seoul. Since he hasn't seen much of the city yet, we met inItaewon for dinner. There's a new Latino restaurantthat was fantastic-- mussels in spicy tomato sauce, salad with black beans and avocado-- yummy! Afterwards, we walked along the main strip for awhile, and then went into All That Jazz, which is the onejazz club in Itaewon, and one of the better jazz clubsin Seoul. Ironically enough, former students of minehad performed the earlier set tonight! The band wasso-so, and it turned out the guitar player studied atMcGill. At the table across from Dion and I, therewere two foreign guys, and it turns out that one ofthem, Nate, is taking jazz guitar lessons from the guythat was gigging. Nate has studied classical guitarfor years, and is now getting more into jazz playing. It was so nice to be able to have another musician totalk to! Nate has kind of a jam band going with someother guys that I might sit in on once in awhile. After All That Jazz, the four of us stuck together andplayed some darts and drank sangria at the WolfhoundPub, which is supposed to be an Irish pub, and then wefinished off the night (way too late!) at Bar Nana, where we met a really funny Korean guy who goes byJimmy. Good night for meeting people, and asurprisingly fun night out in Itaewon! |
