Week 20- Y4(Jul 27th to Aug 2nd)
Sunday: Tonight we ended up having a little spontaneous dinner party, with Joe doing the cooking! Joe had all these ingredients to make this special chicken recipe, and since he's leaving, he doesn't need them . . . A nice little party, with lots of wine, and good close friends. That said, man is the jet lag ever hitting me now! I was passed out on the couch before the party was even half over!
Tuesday: A couple months ago, one of my favourite students told me that she had cancer for the 3rd time, and that she was taking a break from school to have a surgery. I was so upset! Before we finished last semester though, she told me that she wanted to continue to take private lessons with me once she got out of the hospital, plus she wanted to study English at a hagwon! I'm so impressed with her: she had left me a message asking when we could start lessons before my plane even landed! So today, we had our first private lesson. I'm so so so relieved to her looking happy and healthy-- looks like everything went well in the hospital. I'm absolutely amazed by Jini's strength and good attitude-- she is one kickass kid! She's not the most talented student, but I've never met anyone with as much drive and desire to learn as her. This morning Summer left for Texas, and will be gone for a month. Boo ;(
Thursday: Strangely enough, my old friends Nicole and Rob from high school are here in Korea right now! One of Nicole and Rob's good friends from Oshawa came out to Korea to teach English about a year ago, and now they're here visiting! I hadn't seen either of them since I graduated high school, but Nicole sent me a message on Facebook asking if I wanted to meet up in Seoul, so I said yes, of course! I met Nicole, Rob, their friend Rich (who lives in Seoul now) and their other friend Chris (who's travelling with them) in Insadong for some shopping, and then I took them to a Korean restaurant that I really like in Insadong. It was actually really really fun! Rich and I hit it off right away and were verbally sparring with each other by the time the kimchi was on the table, and Chris is really funny and sweet; plus it was great to catch up with Nicole and Rob, and hear about what they're doing these days! Since Nicole used to work at the Westin hotel in Toronto, she managed to get a free night at the Westin here in Seoul, so after dinner, we went up to the hotel room for a little (wow, it's super nice!!!) and then we walked to Myeong dong, where we found this random little bar that honestly looked like some grandmother's basement! Flowered upholstered couches, fake plants-- totally tacky and kind of hilarious! Also hilarious: the woman who apparently owns the bar and calls herself "Jackson, just like Michael Jackson". She ended up sitting down and drinking with us, which quickly devolved into her making really really random and weird comments, and singing "Let's get retarded in here" while gyrating and trying to kiss me on the cheek! All five of us were in absolute hysterics, and we ended up staying until about 6 in the morning because "Jackson" was just so damn random and inadvertently hilarious!
Saturday: Bobby left this morning, and won't be back for 2 months! :( I'm super sad to see my girls go, especially since now I'm stuck here with Max, whom I still don't particularly like . . . After salsa tonight, I went to Hongdae to meet up with Nicole, Rob, Chris and Rich for their last night out in Seoul (Rich is also going home for about 3 weeks, and will be returning to Korea in late August). I also met 2 of Rich's really good friends, Leo and some other guy whose name I can't remember . . . I think Rich and Leo and other friend and I will be hanging out a lot when they get back! Lots of fun, and we can make fun of Oshawa together . . . One thing that I really really hate about Korea: taxi drivers, especially late at night. From Hongdae, it's really hard to find a taxi driver to take me to Haebangchon, because they all want to wait for a bigger cab fare. I finally just got into a cab and refused to get out, but he wanted to charge 5 times as much as it was supposed to cost. I eventually had to fake-cry (at least I did it well enough for him to believe it was real!) to get him to take me home. Grr.
