Week 14 (May 29th to June 4th)
Sunday May 29th, Today Lee took me for lunch downtown. We actually had Indian food, which is awesome! One of the things that I really miss about home is being able to get any kind of food at any time, so I was really happy. Granted, the food was kind of crappy and not very authentic, but it was still good to have something different!
Tuesday May 31st, This is going to be one hellish week. We're all already exhausted from all those stupid level tests, and making up report cards that are utterly false, and all of the other crap we had to do last week. But to top it all off, we had to do model class presentations today. Despite the fact that our open classes (where the parents sit in and watch) are more than two weeks away, it seems imperative that we have all our materials together NOW! And this can't be just like a regular class-- Sue wants it to be big and dramatic and over the top, and planned down to the last second, because we have to show the parents how AMAZING their children are, even though most of them are decidedly un-amazing! So we had to present our open classes to all of the teachers. Sue wasn't satisfied with any of them, so we have re-present our open classes on Thursday with fixed-up lesson plans. We've already stayed at work really late today, and now we have to stay late again on Thursday in attempt to satisfy a woman who will never ever be satisfied with our work. To blow off our collective steam, Evan and Jason and I headed over to Mike's for a jam and some drinks.
Thursday June 2nd, Fortunately, our presentations didn't take as long as I thought they would. We were allowed to go individually, and we didn't have to go through the stuff that we didn't change. But it's still a huge pain that we have to do all of this RIGHT NOW, and Sue still wasn't satisfied. At least the presentations are over; now we can relax for the weekend, and have a relatively easy week next week. I had my first date in Korea in tonight. I met up with Lee, the guy I met on Evan's birthday. We went to a galbi restaurant (galbi is beef), and then I finally got to go to the one jazz club in Daegu. The atmosphere is beautiful in the club, and they have an incredible wine list, but there wasn't any live music (only on weekends), and even worse, they were playing a Diana Krall DVD (who as most of you know, I can't stand!). I'll have to check out the club on the weekends, and see if I can find some real jazz musicians here yet. I need some jazz gigs badly!
Saturday June 4th, Today we left for Busan! Busan is the second biggest city in Korea, and it's on the south-east coast. It's really well known for having awesome beaches, and that's exactly what we plan to do for the long weekend-- sit on the beach! Evan, Jason and I were aiming to leave in the late afternoon (we had to wait for Evan's air conditioner to be installed), but Mike (who was driving us down) was taking forever to get going, so we didn't end up leaving until 7pm! I had hoped to have a full Saturday in Busan, but we ended up getting there at about 9:30pm instead. We headed straight to the bar to meet up with our friends-- almost everyone I know from Daegu was in Busan for the weekend. Plus Evan's best friend, Sean, works in Busan, so we had someone to show us around (and provide somewhere for us to sleep!). After the bar (which is called U2, again with the strange names!), we went to a dance club called "The Vinyl Underground". It was so unbelievably packed in there, we couldn't move at all! I don't think that Korea has fire codes about this kind of stuff, because if they did, the Vinyl would be in clear violation! We still had a great time, but I was so claustrophobic and it was so sweaty and gross in there! After the dance club, we all headed down to the beach (by this time it was about 3 or 4am) to do some drinking on the beach (can you imagine getting away with that in Canada?) The water was freezing, but it was so nice just to be able to chill on the beach! Also strange: you can buy fireworks and shoot them on the beach at any time! Not the smartest idea while in the company of a bunch of drunk foreigners, but nobody got hurt fortunately!
