Week 12 (May 15th to May 21st)
Wednesday May 18th, Tonight we went to the Commune to check out the open mic night, just to see what the set-up was like and all that stuff. There were some good musicians, but there were some really bad musicians too, so I think that next week when we actually play, we're going to be a big hit! Now we need to come up with a band name-- Mike thinks that Kari and the Weguks would be a perfect name (Weguk is a term for Americans, it's not exactly derogatory, but it's not exactly friendly either). Jason and I sorely disagree, so as of right now we're nameless.
Thursday May 19th, This has been a really busy week at work. Tomorrow, we're doing school wide level tests with our students to assess how they're all coming along. The catch with this it that each of us had to write one test. For example, since I teach mostly beginners, I had to write the beginner test. The inherent flaw with writing a test for beginners is that they really can't read, so it's pretty difficult to make any kind of test that they'll be capable of doing. Plus, Sue wants all of the tests to look the same format wise, which would have been useful information before any of us formatted it, because I had to waste a lot of time fixing it. So long story short, I was at work way longer than I should have been today, because I was trying to format some stupid score sheet.
Friday May 20th, As I predicted, the level test was too difficult for my students. The irony is that I had submitted my test for approval last week, and even though it was "approved", it's obvious that nobody looked twice at it, because after the tests, my head teacher asked me if I had changed it. We do so much extra work around here that never gets looked at, or has to be redone because they decide that they want something entirely different, or whatever. If we were just presented with clear guidelines in the first place, then we wouldn't have to keep redoing perfectly fine work.
Saturday May 21st, Today Evan, Mike and I went to our friend Barry's place in the south part of Daegu. Barry is half-Korean, and has a military father, and now a really sweet military job as a communications specialist or something like that. He has the nicest apartment that I've seen since I got here-- really big and well-decorated. Plus he has lots of cool things that are hard to find unless you're on the military base. For example, I had the best pizza that I've had in a really long time. Plus he had this amazing single barrel Jack Daniel's that is really rare. After Barry's place, we headed over to a club in the university districe because his friend Matt had a gig with his band there. We ended up being so late that we missed Matt's band, but we did see another decent band, so I was just happy to see any live music that didn't suck. It actuallymade me miss home more, because it reminded me of hearing my friends' gigs. Anyway, we ended up at Bubble (the dance club) to finish off the night. Tonight there were a lot more foreigner men there, and I noticed a huge divide in the behaviour of Korean guys and foreigner guys. Korean guys seem much more harmless-- they just want to dance and have fun, and they aren't necessarily trying to "pick me up". All the foreigner men had this kind of desperation thing going on that was just kind of creepy and sad. Evan had to be my pretend boyfriend several times to rescue me-- thank god for him!
