Sunday:
A rainy miserable day, but Summer, Bobby and I got our "tea dresses"
on, and headed out to Wien Cake House, where our friend Elinza was
hosting a bake-off. The event was a fundraiser for Little Travellers, which
is a charity geared towards the problem of AIDS in Africa. There were
about 15 bakers set up around the fringes of the room, and we paid 10
to be tasters, ie eat all the free cake that we could manage! There
were a lot of delicious concoctions (mmm, fresh chocolate chip cookies,
how I missed you!), and some strange ones, and a whole lot of nutty
things that I couldn't eat. The event came off really well though. It was
packed and everyone had a great time!
And it's a good thing that Summer and Bobby and I got our fill today,
because we're going on a 10day fast starting tomorrow! We've got all of
the ingredients necessary (we'll be drinking a delicious concoction of
lemon juice, cayenne pepper and organic maple syrup) and we're ready
to go!

Monday:
And so the fast begins! I'm feeling okay so far, but really really
really want coffee, so I sat in Starbucks for awhile with my marking and
the only thing I'm allowed to have from there-- mint tea. Here's what I
get to consume on the Master Cleanse detox: in the morning, a litre
of salt water. Then throughout the day, I drink fresh squeezed lemon
juice with cayenne pepper and organic maple syrup (it's pretty gross).
Then before bed, some herbal tea. And that's it for 10 days!

Tuesday:
Okay, I'm utterly exhausted today. I had a full day of work, and not
very much energy to deal with it. Getting up the hill was a bitch . . .

Wednesday:
No work today, which is good, because this fast is taking it all out of
me! More marking in Starbucks though.

Thursday:
I feel like I've had a breakthrough today! I have my energy back,
enough to even practise salsa! So I guess the 1st 3 days, your body is
adjusting, and after that it should be smooth sailing. I feel way better
already. Summer, however, texted me this morning from work saying that
she's going on the juice and is done with the fast!

Friday:
So there are 6 Humber College guys here right now visiting our school,
doing masterclasses and concerts and what not. Two of them I've played
with in the past-- Ted Quinlan and Mike Downes. Two of them are my
old teachers from U of T, who were also responsible for getting me this
job! It's really good to see Kirk and Brian, and to be interacting as
colleagues. Tonight, the six Humber guys recorded an EBS concert to be
aired on television. I got a free ticket to be in the audience. It is
SO refreshing to hear really really good music, where every member of
the band is strong and all the tunes are originals . . . makes me miss
home. It's so hard to find good musicians to play with here, who are
creative and open-minded as well as technically capable. Sigh.
After the show, they all went to hang out, but I'm not quite up to
being around food and drink yet, so I went home, despite wanting to hang
out with the Humber guys more.

Saturday:
I got up extra early today, because I had to go Cheongju City to teach
Part 2 of my masterclass series. Once again, the kids were sweet and
well-behaved, though they had a harder time with the lesson today.
After the class, one of the students put an ear of corn directly into my
hands as a gift (it's really common for students to give their teachers
little gifts, especially food), and it was one of those things where it
was really rude to say no, so I had to have some! I felt guilty for
cheating, but then Bobby texted me shortly after saying that she was
breaking her fast! I'm the last one standing now . . .
After Cheongju, I had to hurry back to Seoul to teach my salsa class,
so by the end, I was absolutely exhausted from yelling over the
students, and dancing and teaching at the same time. But there was more to do
still-- twice a year, there's a festival in Haebangchon (my
neighbourhood) where all the bars get together to serve barbecue food, and there
are live bands at every venue, and basically it turns into a street
party (I was supposed to be gigging with the Grateful Dead band tonight,
but the timing conflicted with the salsa class, so I had to get a sub.
Considering how exhausted I was after teaching all day, this turned out
to be a blessing in disguise!). I hung out for a little bit, said hi
to some friends, but I had had enough pretty early on. I was supposed
to go on to Hongdae for Jess' going away party, but I didn't make it,
and ended up in bed by 1am!
Fasting makes me realize how social food and drink are-- when I can't
do either, it can make it difficult to hang out with my friends.
