Week 10 - Y2 (May 7th to May 13th)
Monday May 8th, No class today! Apparently it's the anniversary of Paekche college opening, so everyone has the day off. I love my job . . .
Tuesday May 9th Today one of my vocal jazz ensembles totally surprised me by singing a chord perfectly in tune (trust me, that's the first time it's happened all year), and actually having learned the piece I assigned. I'm also seeing huge huge progess in my one-on-one lessons too. I'm starting to get some decent singers!
Wednesday May 10th, Today I learned that my friend Eoghan has been deported. Of course, I'm really sad about it, but to be honest, I'm not all that surprised. Apparently he got into a fight at the New Order concert in a club last week, and somehow managed to lose all of his identification in the process. Of course, there must have been tons of security at this concert, and he ended up getting thrown in jail, where it must have been realized that Eoghan doesn't have a teaching visa and has been making over 4 million won a month only teaching privates. So he was shipped right back to Ireland, and has a fine to pay.
Thursday May 11th, I thought it was lucky that I had Monday off, but it gets even better-- no work today either! Apparently just like the MT trip a couple months ago; every college has a school festival twice a year, where the students perform, put up booths, sell things, drink a lot, etc. So no classes, but I went down with two of the other vocal teachers to show support for my students (They are always so thrilled to see me outside of class, it's weird! I liked my teachers, but I certainly didn't jump all over them if they showed up at my concerts) The students were pretty funny, they were all trying to get me to buy things from them (that I didn't want!) I ended up with a lot of food that I didn't want, a homemade hair clip, and "lottery" tickets that I ended up giving away to some other students. The performances were also fun to watch-- some of my students sang funk and pop music, and I saw a lot from the other departments too. I learned today that our school also has: a hip-hop dance program, a beauty arts program, a musical theatre program, a modelling program, and so on. (Most of these seem a little useless to me. I mean, who honestly goes to a two year college to be a breakdancer or a model? I was almost expecting to see basket-weaving . . .) The other good part of the day was getting to know Ji Yeon, one of the other vocal teachers. She surprisingly has similar musical interests as me, but she doesn't have a degree, so in June, she's travelling to Holland (I am so jealous) for an audition at a school in The Hague. If she gets in, that means that she will leave Korea for at least two years, but I know that it's a good school that she's auditioning for, so I hope she gets in!
Friday May 12th, I went to Daegu today, en route to Busan tomorrow. Since Vance (the former keyboard player of Daegu Tones) is going back to Texas in a couple days, I wanted to come down and say a proper goodbye. Also tonight, there was a fun trivia night at Commune, so I got to see all of my friends in one place, which was nice. Jason also came down for the night, and we both crashed at Ryan and Lindsey's place.
Saturday May 13th, Ryan, Lindsey, Ange and I left for Busan this morning (a little later than we intended due the antics of last night!), to go to our friend Miranda's surprise party in the evening. Unfortunately, it was cold and cloudy, so we were disappointed already-- no beach! But the rest of the day kept on getting weirder and weirder. First, we went to the supermarket to buy lots of stuff for the party, and while we were there, we saw a mother getting extremely violent with her small child. Of course, we couldn't do anything, because we can't speak Korean, but I was also shocked that nobody else around us did anything either. Then the party was kind of sketchy too . . . first off, there were way too many people in the apartment, and they were all kind of ridiculous, kind of frat boy style. I was definitly not impressed with the people who were there. There were some bizarre conflicts and arguments at the party among the guests that left Ryan, Lindsey. Ange and myself with bad tastes in our mouth. Since we were crashing there that night, we tried to make the best of it, but I think what we all really wanted was to get out of there.
