Ember's domain stretches from a volcanic chain of islands in the southern ocean, then east, north and west into a plain, up forested hills, to an alpian barrier of snow-capped mountains. The coastline is mostly marsh and flood plain. Of the rare coastal cities, the capital resides on a roughly oval-shaped rising of land, protected from the violent ocean by the hereditary home of the royal family.
From the city, across a deep ocean channel, a black castle sits under the steaming chimney rock of an ancient volcano and above the mists from water falling over the black cliffs to the salt water far below. The isle is called Ember for in the fall the autumn colors flare like the inner heat of a burning ember in a coal fire.
A person could live their entire life on the Isle of Ember without visiting the mainland. This independence does cause some friction between the city/kingdom residents and the "Coalies", so called by the mainlanders due to the island's resemblance to a burning lump of coal.
Crops: wood, rice, various vegetables, fruits (such as 'red berries'), honey
Livestock: marsh ponies, goats, rabbits, birds, fish, bees
Water sources: mineral-rich hot water springs, fresh water lake
Saleable Goods: gemstones (occasionally found in caves or on the beach), carved and/or waxed wood, leather, woven cloth (from mohair type goats), reed baskets, red and yellow dyes
