Every year on the last Saturday of July, one of the biggest firework events will be held in Tokyo Sumida River, called the Sumidagawa Hanabi Taikai. Approx 20,000 units of fireworks will be displayed. This year (2001) it was held on July 28.
This year we invited Aizawa-san to join us. We took the bus which brought us to the area directly from home. We arrived around 5:30pm and we found a place at the Sumida Park where we waited for about an hour. Before the fireworks began, we started to eat the food we prepared, chicken wings, hamburger, beef rolls and pasta salad. Of course we also prepared beer and Japanese cocktail!
The park was supposed to be the best place to see the firework since it is right next to the river. Unfortunately, because of the tree in front of us, we could only see the higher fireworks. All lower level displays had to be imagined.
The whole program lasted for an hour. Because of the bad tree, we decided to move to another location. On our way to the station, the road was blocked for pedestrian use where fireworks could be seen clearly. The most impressive ones, in my opinion, were a heart, a star and a happy face.
