Knoppix V3.7 Live CD
Intel 536ep Hardware Modem Driver installation
Introduction
This guide will help you install the drivers for the Intel 536ep modem to a system running Knoppix V 3.7 from the Live CD. Test Computer: ASUS P4PE, Celeron 2.0ghz ,1GB ram, CDROM. No Hard drive.
Files Needed
(The "m" in 4.69m is for modified. Do not confuse this with the intel-536EP-4.69.tar.gz driver from the Intel download site. They are very different in that the one from intel does not load.)
Procedure
Boot Knoppix V3.7 (Kernel 2.4.27) from the CDROM and let it start the KDE desktop.
Copy the file "intel-536-4.69m.tar.gz" to /home/knoppix
Open a root shell ( the little penguin and "root shell")
Enter the following at the prompt:
1. cd /home/knoppix
2. tar -zxvf intel-536EP-4.69m.tar.gz
3. ./intel536ep
Close the command line root shell.
Issues
Disconnect / unplug your LAN cable or it will not work. The problem is the modem will dial out and log in but the internet browser cannot connect and download data. I have not figured out why. Original posted web page contained errors in the instructions. This version is corrected 090705. My apologies to those who tried the script and it failed due to my typos.
Notes: Script intel536ep line "mknod /dev/536ep c 240 1" uses the default of "240" to find your systems major number for 536ep enter "cat /proc/devices" at the command prompt and look for something like "240 536ep" then edit and replace the "240" with your systems number.
To Do
If you know how I can invoke this script using an icon or close the root shell upon execution of the script please let me know. I would like to make this transparent to the user. For now this is the best I can do.
The user in one of the Slavic (Yugoslavia?) countries that posted my file to a file sharing service can you please send me the link to the chat forum. I was following it but lost it while trying to translate it to english.I was trying to find out if it was working for you or if it was useless. I am assuming it works because you shared it.
Make this work on Knoppix V3.8,V3.9 on kernel 2.6. So far I have not had not much success.
