Phytoestrogenic Herbs

Source: The Phoenix Project

The April 25, 1994 issue of Newsweek magazine, began its cover story with the statement that “Just a few years ago scientists didn’t know phytochemicals existed. But today they are the new frontier in [medical] research.” Further, the article stated, “In the world where science merges with health, phytochemicals are the next big thing… phytochemicals offer the next great hope for a magic pill, one that would go beyond vitamins.” In referring to phytochemicals as a health blockbuster, the article told of multimillion dollar project[s] to find, isolate, and study them. Quoting the U.S. Public Health Service, the article states that certain phytochemicals even “… can turn off the proliferative process of cancer.”

A recent article in Health Counselor magazine addressed the estrogenic effects of phytoestrogens, estrogen-like compounds contained in certain plants and berries. One of the most exciting findings is that phytoestrogens are believed to support female hormone levels by causing an increase in estrogen effects. Herbs and berries containing phytoestrogens also have other compounds, such as flavonoids, which control the effects of other hormones; phytoestrogens can even ease menstrual cramps. “Unlike drugs, the herbs naturally nourish and tone the female system, making them useful in a broad range of female conditions”, according to Dr. Michael Murray, “…with no reported side effects.” Evanesce is one of the very first commercially available phytochemical products, naturally formulated from plants and berries to emphasize phytoestrogens.

According to Susan Weed in her book Menopausal Years, “Using plants rich in phytoestrols is remarkably different from taking hormones, even natural ones … phytoestrols provide hormonal building blocks, rather than hormones themselves, thus allowing [your body] to create the precise amounts (and combinations) of hormones needed on your unique … journey. When using phytoestrol-rich herbs, you don’t have to eliminate excess hormones or know exactly what dose to take. With a smorgasbord of choices, the body can create the hormones [it] needs from the building blocks supplied by the plant… This process removes the stress of eliminating excess estrogen from the kidneys and liver.”

The herbs and berries which have the most potent phytoestrogens include:

Chaste Berry (Vitex agnus-castus)

Indigenous to the Mediterranean, berries of the chaste tree have been shown to cause increased progesterone production (the berry’s effect is to increase the pituitary’s secretion of luteinizing hormone, and reduction of follicle-stimulating hormone). Reported clinical studies indicate that Chaste Berry also seems to have a regulating effect on both progesterone and estrogen, balancing the ratio between them – this greatly reduces emotional ups and downs. In other clinical studies, Dr. Michael Murray reported that Chaste Berry reduced acne flare-ups and water retention, reduced general PMS, and even prolonged the ability to breast feed. Because of the effects of increased progesterone output, Chaste Berry has a long history of use as a testosterone suppressant; it was once also known as Monk’s Pepper. Chaste Berry has also been shown to have a marked effect on breast tissue, even aiding breast milk production, for example. German researchers recommend using Chaste Berry in conjunction with certain other herbs for maximum benefit.

Black Cohosh Root

Often used by Native Americans and early European settlers in the New World to relieve menstrual cramps. Black Cohosh Root is highly phytoestrogenic.

Dong Quai

Used throughout Asia to aid a wide variety of “female problems,” from painful menstruation to hot flashes. Dong Quai’s highly phytoestrogenic effects are heightened if Peony Root is taken at the same time.

Precautions

Using herbs can intensify the hazards of self-medication-problems range from mis-identification and mis-labeling to variations in potency. James Duke, an established herbal researcher for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says “Those who self-medicate have a fool for a doctor.” Overdosing can easily and quickly create severe health problems – an FDA report concludes that “too much of any herb is toxic.”

Evanesce

Evanesce is one of the very first commercially available “phytochemical” products, naturally formulated from plants and berries to emphasize phytoestrogens.

Evanesce is an estrogenic herbal formulation which combines appropriate quantities and ratios of the herbs listed above, plus other necessary herbs, such as Motherwort, Nettle Herb, Red Peony Root, Ginger Rhizome, etc. and vitamin B6.

Medical reports indicate that there have been no long-term side effects from proper usage of these herbs. The company that produces these capsules uses techniques which guarantee potentcy.

Most important for you to understand is that it takes three to eight years for a girl to develop a woman’s body. In a male body, estrogens from any source must overcome testosterone before feminization really begins; you cannot expect to see substantial feminization – breast development – within only a few weeks, regardless of the source of estrogen. Breast development from any estrogen treatment program is ultimately a function of your own personal genetic potential.

Common consumer reports include the type of breast tenderness that is associated with breast development, especially from those consumers taking 3-4 capsules per day. “Could this work as well as Premarin, or other prescription hormone replacement therapies?”, is an often-asked question. There are no promises, of course – and certainly there are no claims.

Many people report that Evanesce calms the obsessive – compulsive / depressive emotions quickly – in many cases overnight! Although Evanesce is a valuable addition to any existing prescription hormone program, best results are experienced by those who are not on a prescription hormone program. Manufacturer’s recommended usage is from 1-6 capsules per day.

Feminol

A wonderful “sister” product, Feminol contains many of the best ingredients in Evanesce, plus glandulars as an additional source of estrogen. It also contains other phytoestrogens which are not part of the great, original Evanesce formulation. Manufacturer’s recommended usage is 1-2 capsules per day.
