Mt. Evans - one of Colorado's Fourteeners. Enjoy the beautiful 14 mile ride from the entrance to the summit parking lot -14,130 ft, then walk the last bit to the tippy top of 14,264 ft. Along with the breathtaking views, there are usually many mountain goats. I saw 3 herds this past trip. In the middle of summer, expect winter conditions near the top. This was my second time up, and we lucked out weather wise. A light jacket was enough. The ranger said she had been bundled in many layers that morning, as was typical, but it turned warm that afternoon. The 1st time I went up there in 1992, it was around 40degrees and hail. I did not make it to the very top this trip. I was having a touch of altitude sickness, and coupled with the snow/ice on the trail, I didn't think I should chance it. |
