Meghna was ten yesterday. This year she decided that
she wanted to have a
She was so excited about
planning the party down to the littlest details. We made black satin cloaks and
paper witches/wizards hats for each child, and we made wands (chopsticks
painted black and dipped in glitter).
The party invitation was
printed on parchment paper, and looked like the original
The garden was decorated with
black, gold and purple gas balloons, and we had printed pictures of all the
main characters which we hung around the garden. We had hanging black paper
decorations of hats, broomsticks, cauldrons and lightning bolts. And a huge 4
ft golden snitch filled with gold covered chocolate which was our piñata.
As the children entered, they
received their cloaks, hats and wands, and then decorated their hats with coloured star stickers. That kept them busy for a while.
We hung a big silver coloured hula hoop about 12 feet off the ground, and
wearing their cloaks, hats, and wand and astride their brooms,
the kids had to shoot goals! Great fun! We had made 2 special brooms, a Firebolt and a Nimbus 2000. We lengthened the handles by
adding PVC pipe, covering with duct tape and then painting them appropriately.
The second game was a potion
treasure hunt. This was the text we printed and gave to each child in a
zip-lock bag. All the ingredients were scattered round the garden.
Find three gold leaves nice
and shiny,
Find two pink flowers, very
tiny.
Find a magic pebble, round
and blue,
Find two little eyes looking
at you.
And then to make your potion

Find one creature that is
yucky to eat!
A frog, a lizard or crocodile
will do
Then the prize for the
Magical potion will
Belong to you!
Next we played Harry Potter
Bingo.
I had downloaded a large no
of
Broom stick Race:
2 teams,
one on the Nimbus 2000 and the other using the Firebolt. We did this as a Relay race and the kids had the
greatest time!
Last game:
Four corners, using the four
house shields, and … Slytherin won!
It was then time to cut the
cake and eat. Meghna and I had spent long hours
planning the cake. And it was worth every moment. The kids were awe-struck, as
were some of the moms. We kept the food simple and familiar.
Once they were done eating,
we gave them light-sticks, and on the count of three, they shouted “Lumos” and
cracked the light sticks! (Unfortunately, some did not work!)
Our finale was the pinata … the golden snitch. Meghna
happily released the gold coins with the help of Chandru.
Great fun!
