Queer As Folk chronicles the lives of a group of twenty-something gay friends as their lives and loves unfold, ambitions soar, passions collide, careers struggle, and fates conflict. They go to work, raise children, look forward to the weekend - and have a healthy interest in sex.

This brave, funny and sometimes graphic portrayal of a world not usually seen on television provides an intimate look at five homosexual men: Brian (Gale Harold), a lusty advertising executive; Michael (Hal Sparks), a discount department store employee secretly in love with Brian; flamboyant window dresser Emmett (Peter Paige); Ted (Scott Lowell), a cyber porn-loving accountant; and Justin (Randy Harrison), a 17-year-old high school student obsessed with Brian. Rounding out the circle of friends are art teacher and new mother Lindsay (Thea Gill), who was impregnated with Brian’s sperm, and her lover, no-nonsense attorney Melanie (Michelle Clunie). For support, Michael can turn to his cheery waitress mum Debbie (Cagney and Lacey’s Sharon Gless).

Throughout the first series we watched the characters variously date, fall in love, come “out”, dance the night away at Babylon, question their sexuality, get arrested or accused of sexual harassment, experience homophobia at school, almost die of a drug overdose, compete in the King of Babylon contest, and get bashed. In the second series there are more exciting adventures with our favourite characters, and more issues covered: recovery from a gay bashing, a relationship between HIV+ and HIV- men, jealousy in the lesbian relationship and a lesbian wedding, a relationship between one of the characters and a much older man, new jobs as a go-go boy, in a cyber porn venture and a comic book shop, and a relationship for Debbie.

The third series of QAF is currently airing on SBS, 10pm Monday nights. Already we've seen Ted & Emmett buy a house together, Mel & Lindsay agree on having another baby & Justin getting a little green eyed as his lover chats with another.
