Apr 1998: One of my greatest genealogical obsessions has been the identity of Ann, or Anna, wife of Benjamin Ball, Jr. who died in Fauquier Co. in 1807. We know that Benjamin Jr. was born in (Old) King George Co. St. Paul's Parish on 13 Sep 1742. This area later fell to Stafford Co. Benjamin's parents were Benjamin Ball and Ann Owen, both from Middlesex Co. Benjamin Sr. had settled in St. Paul's Parish but had purchased land on Carters Run in Fauquier in 1761. From tax records, it is known that Benjamin Jr. actually farmed this land for his father who remained in Stafford. It is not clear if Benjamin Jr. was married at the time his father purchased this land. Carters Run falls to Leeds Parish, but Leeds was not formed until around 1769 from Hamilton Parish. It is thus conceivable that Benjamin and Ann were married in Hamilton Parish prior to 1769. That being the case, those records are unfortunately non extant. Aside from Hamilton Parish, Benjamin and Ann could have been married in St. Paul's. There is no record of their marriage in that register though. Another possibility is they were married by Banns and simply not recorded anywhere. It has been postulated that Ann was the daughter of Joseph SMITH and Elizabeth BALL of Middlesex. They did indeed have a daughter Ann who was born in 1736. She would have been the first cousin of Benjamin Jr. Someone was nice enough to place this Ann in the LDS records as the wife of Benjamin. There is ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF!!! In fact, after years of research, I've seen no interaction between these families following the move north by Benjamin Sr. Others have postulated that Ann was the daughter of Joseph SMITH and Ann ANDERSONwho lived on Pignut Mtn. in Fauquier. These SMITHs and BALLs were very close, but Joseph had no daughter Ann. All this leads me to Ann's estate closing in 1813. In Will Book 6, the clerk wrote the following across the top of the page: "A return of the sale of the Estate of John Ann Ball deceased made by Alexr Welsh administrator 15th of December 1814". The county clerk was Daniel Withers. While he erred in writing the year, he later corrected it by entering the account to record on 24 Jan 1814. I find it fascinating that Daniel Withers, who knew the Ball family, would call her "John Ann Ball". Could he possibly have meant "Joanna"? Could he have been attempting to ascribe a Germanic baptismal name to her? Any thoughts out there? Anybody ever seen anything like this before? Thanks for listening... Jim Ball
