Karen's Blog
Life, the Universe, and Everything
Entry for October 18, 2006

This is my first BLOG entry. Hmm... not very exciting as it's just me typing random things into the computer which people probably wont read.

OK, let's make it not so random... what is happening in my life at the moment?

Well, last week at work, they told me that they are going to stop running the Health & Social Care A-Level which I teach.  No apology or nothing. Just like: "you're out of a job, so there." So I was not best pleased about this, putting it mildly.  I like working at College (I probably can't name it "for legal reasons" and will get embroiled in a libel case!) and I don't want to have to leave.

Anyway, then one of my colleagues told me that because the College had 'bought' me off the agency, they are essentially committing to employing me as if it's a permanent post. So they should have to either pay me compensation, or offer me alternative work at a similar level (i.e. not a job being the cleaner!) However, I really need to get the Union involved.

Oh dear, I'm not in a Union though! So I am going to join one this week, as it's half term and I will have free time to read up on them and whatever. Normally, I think Unions are for people who life to moan a lot and go on strikes demanding more money. There was a strike last year at work and people in my staff room actually fell out cause some people (myself included) "crossed a picket line"... or as I like to call it: we came in to work, when our colleagues stood outside all day shouting like hooligans.

Anyway, that's it so far, I am going to join a union and them get them to sort it out. I probably should dig out my contract, but it may be in a proverbial "safe place".... might have to go to Personnel and get a copy off them.

However, a Union can't make them agree to continue to do the course, so it looks like I'll be out of a job no matter what. So I am going to be looking in to:

(a) Doing a Masters in Philosophy

(b) Getting a job elsewhere teaching Philosophy

(c) Being a property developer

I think (c) may just be a pipe dream, as it is a considerable financial risk and I think I'm not the risk taking type when it comes to money. Jumping out of an aeroplane, yes. Risking money, no. But i may decide that it's not as big a risk as I think it is, and go for it. Who can say? The world is my Lobster, as Austin says. (Yes he does know it's supposed to be Oyster: it's an attempt at humour!)

That's about it for now I think.
