| Honors Algebra 2 Mathematician Paper, Presentation, & Poster | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Choose any mathematician you want; however, no two students can use the same mathematician in the same class period. If you prefer to write your paper on a math topic, please see the suggested list. E-mail Mrs. Gavin ([email protected]) your top three or four choices of a mathematician/topic by noon on Sunday, November 2, 2008 (Mrs. Gavin will let you know which mathematician/topic on which you will be writing your paper by Friday, November 14, 2008.) Paper: o Typed in Microsoft Word using Times New Roman in font size 12, double-spaced. o Proper MLA heading, 1� margins, page numbers, and a title. o At least 2 full pages; no more than 4 full pages o Correct spelling and grammar o Indented paragraphs and no extra lines between paragraphs o Paragraphs should contain clear topic sentences and be well developed (at least 5 sentences) o Include a �Works Cited� page using MLA documentation with at least 2 sources o At least one quote from each source, properly cited using MLA citations within the paper� no back to back citations within the paper o Approximately 40% of your paper should be facts about the mathematician (where the mathematician is from and went to school, etc.) o Approximately 60% of your paper should be about the mathematical contributions the mathematician made to the world o Your paper should address the following about the mathematician: Full name, Nationality, Birth date - date of death, schooling, occupations Funny or interesting facts about the mathematician Important discoveries/mathematical concepts Was there any controversy over the concepts? Are his ideas used today? Where or how? What impact did his ideas have on the world? o This paper must be attached to an e-mail and sent to Mrs.Gavin ([email protected]) by 4pm on Monday, November 24, 2008. (A hard copy will not be accepted. Late papers will not be accepted.) Presentation & Display of Important Information: o You are expected to give a 3-4 minute presentation on your mathematician to the class. This can be as simple as stating the facts, or more creative, such as a skit, song, dance, or whatever else you can think of, but please clear this with Mrs. Gavin first. o You need to have some sort of a display of important information about your mathematician to refer to during your presentation and serve as a visual aide. This could be a poster board with pictures and facts displayed, or if you choose to be more creative maybe playbill, a tri-fold pamphlet, menu, song lyrics, anything you like as long as it has all of the pertinent information as described in the next bullet. If you do not use a poster board, then you must have a handout for everyone in the class. o Your �display of important information� must include the mathematician�s name, dates he/she was alive, other important dates in his/her history, where he/she is lived and attended school, important mathematical contributions, at least 2 quotes stated by the mathematician or about the mathematician, and picture of the mathematician (if available) or symbol. o Presentations will begin Friday, December 5, 2008 o You are expected to take notes while other students present �there will be a quiz after each day of presentations on which you may use your notes. |
