| Art Salon ... 2/27/05 | |||||||||||||||||
| This was the first Salon of '05. The purpose of these events is to foster real interaction between audiences and artists, affording everyone a chance to connect in a way that is impossible in a club or concert setting. I hope that these intimate gatherings encourage people to become engaged with the art on a personal level. The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful day. We started the afternoon with a bit of food and good conversation, after which I sang with our featured pianist,Jack Reidling, for about 20 minutes. He played a couple of solo pieces before we moved on to the featured visual artist, Kelley Havens. She chatted about her history and her work and took questions for about 20 minutes. Then we took a break while folks refreshed their food & drink, and took the opportunity to examine Kelleys work and Kevin Axts wonderful photography. He is on the road and couldnt be with us, but his wonderful photos were enjoyed greatly in his absence. Break time over, we continued by featuring Jack doing 3 improvisations on pieces by Villa Lobos, Bach & Brahms, telling us some hilarious stories, and ending with a couple more songs. I joined him for a few more tunes and we invited bass player Ron Javorsky to sit in. It was a wonderful afternoon that included music, food, visual arts, and camaraderie. A giant Thank You to Dave Belo for letting us turn his home into our Salon. (And using his engineering expertise to get things hung!) Here are a few of the highlights |

| An O.C. treasure, Jack is one of those rare pianists who is equally at home playing classical music or jazz, and he graced us with both.I have had the privilege of working with him on numerous occasions, and I was thrilled that he made time to be with us. | |||||||||||||||||

| Mixed Media Visual Artist Kelley Havens is an emerging artist who works with ceramics, acrylics and dyes to create both abstract and organic vases, plates and bowls, often incorporating found objects such as shells, leaves, and pebbles. Her work is earthy and sensual. |

| The crowd enjoying Jack as he transported them with Bach and Brahms, among others. I especially loved his improvisations on a piece by Villa Lobos. (Did you know that there was a tradition of improvisation in classical music until the about the late 19th century? Yep.. Mozart used to do it all the time.) | |||||||||||||||||
| Kevin couldn't be with us because he was on the road, but he graciously allowed us to show some of his photographs that were from a show he did at the Brand Library. My little snaps here can't even begin to show you how wonderful his work is, so I suggest you go to his website and see them for yourself! www.kevinaxt.com |

| More of Kelley's work... It was a Great Day! Look for another in May. |

| These pieces were above the fireplace, which we also used as a slide show screen because, besides telling us about the work that she had brought, she also showed us some slides of her earlier work. | |||||||||||||||||
