Amsterdam - 2004
I took the train from Berlin to Amsterdam. It was my first long train ride ( about 5 hours).  Watching the country go by out of the window was beautiful and relaxing. It's a great way to see Europe.

I spent 4 days in Amsterdam. Walked by feet off, took a trip on the canals, went to a gang of museums (including the Van Gogh ), spent an afternoon out on the coast, and even saw an Improv Show. Oh yeah... I'm the tourist from hell. Phew!

This is a side canal off a major one.The locals often travel by water. Happy hour on the canals is a hoot!
This is the small canal street where I rented a studio apartment.I walked up 4 flights in  the tiny circular stairway in the middle of the building. The buildings are narrow and tall ( about 20 ft wide) because they were taxed by the size of their footprint. No way to get large items upstairs except to hoist them using the large hook on the outside of the top floors.
This is a post card I love. These folks have the best of both worlds. I want one of these car/boats!

Amsterdam is a very small city with a huge population. Houseboats were one of the solutions to the housing problem.  They are very cool. Some of them are vacation rentals...
There are also streets in town. Mostly narrow, winding ones. Walking & bikes are the main mode of transport on land, although there are plenty of crazy drivers on the bigger streets.
Notice the Mickey D and Burger King. You can run, but ya can't hide!
There are also Starbucks EVERYWHERE...
I turned into a tiny alley next to a 16th century church and discovered the infamous redlight district. The alley was so small that I could almost reach out and touch the church on my left, and the brothel on my right. Talk about the sacred and the profane! ( I'll leave it to you to decide which is which...)

This is also a post card ( you can't take pictures of the ladies... I saw one come right out of her room and scream at a tourist who tried...). Who says men don't enjoy a little window shopping now and then?
