Hi Everyone
I hope everyone had a good summer and is looking forward to another
great ski season this year. Much of the pre season work for the budget
and organisation of programmes for 2003 has been completed. The Board
is excited and encouraged by the new additions to this years coach
staff who will ensure that QAST has a top quality programme. Successful
meetings have been had with nzski.com on availability of training
space, dates for races etc. so we are able to confirm our race and
events calendar to our members early in the season. We thank Nzski.com
for giving QAST it’s full support for this coming season.
Annual General Meeting:
This will be held on Sunday 27th April 2003 at The Gold Ridge Hotel,
Frankton Rd, Queenstown (opposite Sherwood Manor) at 2pm. All members
and visitors welcome. Please try and come to support the organisation.
Will be great to see everyone.
Ski Racing NZ:
SRNZ have already had several meetings in 2003. Our representative for
the year will again be Murray Popenhagen. A tentative date for their
AGM is 17th May. The Race Calendar is available in Draft thru the website
www.skiracing.org.nz
Wakatipu Ski Club Ski Sale:
This is scheduled for Sunday 18th May at the Events Centre at Frankton.
Gather together your ski or Snowboard gear that is unwanted and support
this great fundraiser for the Wakatipu Ski club. Further information
will be advertised in early May. For any member who has equipment at
the office please collect this if you would like to place this in the
sale.
TD and ROC Seminar:
This year the above meetings will again be held in Christchurch on 23/24
May. Several representatives from our organisation will attend including
Murray Popenhagen (SRNZ Rep) and our Race Secretary for the year. If
anyone is interested in attended this seminar please contact Stevie
in the office.
New Zealand Alpine Ski Academy:
The applications for the Ski Academy run through Wakatipu High School
have gone out. The successful applicants will be notified by Friday
2nd May. We welcome back Jane Gunn-Lewis as the Co-Ordinator for another
season and look forward to working with Jane, Grant Adolph at the high
school and Jan Eyles who is our Liaison person on the QAST Board. Please
call me if you have any queries regarding the Academy.
QAST Coach Structure for 2003:
After receiving dozens of applications for coaching positions we are
pleased to announce that the new Head Coach for this season will be
Scott Zahn. Scott is currently Head FIS Coach with the National Alpine
Training Centre in Canada which was set up six years ago.
Athletes at the Centre compete at regional and Nor-Am FIS level and
are consistently ranked in the top 50 in the world and the top five
in Canada for their age. The sort of expertise Scott will bring to QAST
based on his work at the Centre and his wide experience as a top level
coach in both Canada and the United States will be invaluable.
Brad Saxe will the Head Intermediate coach . Brad has a similar background
and is presently Head Coach of the Jackson Hole Ski Club, a prominent
alpine programme in North America.
His previous appointments include assistant coach roles with the US
Ski Team men’s regional team and the women’s A team in downhill
and Super-G He has personally trained three current members of the US
Ski team and one former member. He has also been closely associated
with the US Men’s Europa Cup technical and speed teams as well
as the US Men’s Word Cup speed team, as guest coach, over the
last three years.
Scott and Brad are both highly ranked Level 5 coaches and they will
form the nucleus of a strong coaching structure.
Summer Dryland Programme:
This has been run successful by Guy Hills since last November. He will
continue to work with the athletes throughout the winter along with
Niall Magee of Back on Track Physiotherapy. Together they will work
with the NZ Academy of Sport to support our SRNZ Team athletes and will
attend the first SRNZ camp to be held in Dunedin over 4 days commencing
21st April.

GS Suits/Equipment:
I have had my first request for Junior GS suits. If anyone has a GS
suit to fit a 12yr old boy weighting about 38-40 kilos please contact
the office if you would like to sell this. Any other junior suits for
sale can be left at the office for display from now on.

50’s of Coronet event:
We are looking forward to another mighty 50K downhill endurance ski
event this year with an exciting line up of new teams and old favourites
who have applied for selection. The successful teams will be announced
in the soon as the momentum builds for this year's race. We will have
access again to HP's sophisticated timing system and support staff to
give us those precise and instant results. The event organisers are
very grateful for all of the volunteer help from Qasties and supporters
and they look forward to a good turn out again this year. Of course
it is a huge fundraiser for us as well as a very exciting event to be
involved in. Watch this space and the media in the coming weeks for
news on a new participation programme for event supporters.
Data Projector Hire:
Our Data projector is available for hire at the following rates:
½ day - $100 +GST 1-2 days $180+GST 3-5 days $150+GST
Please call Stevie in the office if you need more details on hiring
our Data projector.
Coaches Accommodation:
Please notify Stevie in the office if you have any leads on accommodation
for this winter for our coaches. The QAST Board and office would appreciate
any help in this area.
