| for purposes of our discussion, we shall also name the pre-hispanic philippine story as the era of lapu-lapu for the sake of simplistically including all that is either pre-historic, bordering on the historic, or not-quite-historic - any, or a combination thereof. |
| to begin with, lapu-lapu is one of the most controversial characters of the philippine story. the world knew about him because he was included in the diary of the magellan expedition that arrived in present-day phillipines in 1521 (magellan actually named the islands 'iles of lazarus'). scholars argue that the account of that famous battle in mactan where magellan was killed made no specific mention that it was lapu-lapu himself who killed magellan. true it was that the hostile natives that fought the magellan forces were allies of lapu-lapu, or belonged to lapu-lapu's domain. |
