nineteen kopong-kopong
& much ado about age
as they say in art 'provenance is everything'. what is the value of your monet if its provenance can not be ascertained.
why age? the age of an object or the age of an incident (ie when did it happen) is the first modifying quality or character of an issue or object. age at once places the object or issue under study its place in historical existence. age at once gives color to its past. it is then no wonder why people always ask how old it is. it is also no wonder why people make such a big deal of it. do you remember when the western civilized world turned 2,000 years old - in the 2nd millenium? (yes the time when all were agog over the y2k virus)  the egyptians quipped 'well, welcome to our 7th millenium'.
nineteen kopong-kopong in the filipino psyche is the colorful way of saying the object or issue at hand cannot be ascertained, or simply - forgotten.
the filipino mind, as is true for most cultures, does not automatically reckon events in time as particular calendar dates or years. it recalls events as attached to significant happenings or as attached to important characters related or unrelated to the event in question. thereafter, the memory deduces the accompanying date the event in question happened.
