philippine history for newbies
it is best to learn philippine history using historical reckoning points that you already know (at least that's what my lola told me).
briefly, world history is reckoned from the western point of view of civilization (consciously, or unconsciously) by almost verybody who is a newbie. it begins with (1) the ANCIENT, then (2) the MIDDLE ages, then the (3) MODERN age - for us newbies. the ANCIENT or CLASSICAL world is everything from the prototype civilization called the GREACO-ROMAN and back to earlier civilizations.
'reckon life from 3 points - a beginning, a middle, an end' - so my lola said. and using that adage we simplistically divide the story of our culture and heritage.
the end of this era is the fall of rome around 500 AD (for our newbie purposes). then the world (ie the western world) was plunged into the MIDDLE ages, also called a DARK age of about a thousand years. so-called because the gains of civilized life went into disorder and the world seemed to have no electricity at all (that view has been challenged by scholars of history ever since and we reserve debates on that matter to a different forum). so from about 500 AD, the the dark age that was to last about 1,000 years was enlightened by the RENAISSANCE at about 1500 AD (at least for our newbie purpose)...and from there began the MODERN age as we know it.

philippine history that is definitive begins with the discovery by magellan (spanish explorer) of the philippines in 1521. and from there is known as the spanish colonial era - so anything before that time has been called by scholars as the PRE-HISPANIC era of the philippines. and so, it is said that philippine history only began during the late renaissance period, but the phillipine story of course began much much earlier than that.
philippine history that is not-so-definitive begins with everything that is considered as historical until the time magellan arrived in the philippines in the 1500s (1521 to be exact).
CAUTION NEWBIES ! scholars reckon that the middle ages began about 400 AD, while it ended around 1200 to 1300 AD (depending on your location of study in europe) when the renaissance began to herald the modern world.
