for the meantime while my cousin the priest is still contemplating on the wisdom of joining this website, let me tell you how i learned the ecclesiastic history of the philippines from my lola
to simplistically understand the whole gamut of philippine ecclesiatic history, let us set the tone by applying a teaching of the Lord - 'don't be a fence-sitter, either be in or out, yes or no, white or black...' - at least i think that is what it means. somewhere down the line we shall apply that adage when we reach the pope in the vatican. we of course begin with Christ and His greaco-roman, judaeo-christian tradition. (later you will know why it is called such)
western or latin church
(aka roman catholic church)
eastern or byzantine or greek  church
(aka orthodox church)
~350 AD - rome, becoming too difficult to manage due to its size and many frontiers, was divided into a western province ruled by constantine and an eastern province ruled by theodosius
~6 AD - the time of the historic Christ
ruled by the pope, pope one is st. peter (of the historic Christ's era), and the current pope is named benedict, who lives and reigns in the country called vatican
renaissanc era
~1450 (thereabouts) - martin luther comes along and further divides the church into catholics versus protestants (meaning they protested the rule of the pope) hence, protestant one is martin luther
the roman catholics who maintain obedienc to the pope
various religious orders who are obedient to the pope, who help spread the Word of the Lord, the pope absolutely controls them
various protestant churches (who refuse to be called protestants, but by their own religious name) who maintain some relation with the pope
secular (or diocesan) priests who are directly under the pope since the time of peter, & are absolutely obedient to the pope
superior generals, vicars, etc
cardinals, archbishops & bishops
eg augustinians, dominicans, franciscans, jesuits, capuchins, redemptorists, & others
eg diocese of manila, diocese of cebu, diocese of bacolod, etc
eg methodists, anglicans, baptists, adventists, mormons,
mostly stayed in central & eastern europe - they didn't seem to reach the philippines
the religious orders that came to the philippines during the spanish colonial era
the regular, secular priests that came to manila during the spanish colonial era
was there a strong protstant church presence during the spanish colonial era ?
in order of appearance:
1 - agustinians
2 - dominicans
3 - jesuits
4 - franciscans
5 - capuchins
who came first? the religious orders? or the seculars?
spanish colonial philippines
american colonial philippines
3rd republic philippines until present
local-bred 'protestant' groups
foreign-bred 'protestant' groups
eg aglipayan (aka iglesia filipina independiente)
eg see above
- redemptorits
- society of the divine word
- others
the various diocesan groups further spread to the islands
