"Light Up Your Life"

John 8:12
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have a light of life."

Thomas A. Edison contributed a wonderful gift to the world, when he invented the electric light. Before that, people depended on firelight, candle light and lanterns. We have admired Abraham Lincoln's studying by the light of the fireplace. No one likes to be trapped in darkness.

Years ago, my family took a trip to the Grand Canyon. A park ranger told us that one of the most beautiful sights was the canyon at sunset, and he said there was a bus that would take us to the viewing area. The bus left us at the area. We enjoyed an absolutely beautiful sunset that brought out all the colors of the canyon. There was only one problem: the bus did not return for us and we were left stranded, as darkness surrounded us. We were frightened, for it was difficult to see a step ahead of us. Then one our sons suggested that we walk toward the rim of the canyon. It sounded dangerous, but as we neared the edge, we saw that a rising full moon was hitting the bottom of the canyon and reflecting enough light for us to find our way to safety.

In the same way, if we stay close to Jesus, he will light our path to a life both simple and abundant.

Lord, thank you for lighting my way. Help me to reflect your light to fellow travelers. Amen.
