Focus on the Cross

John 6:20
But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

Last spring, my wife Rosie flew to Memphis to visit our daughter Danita. It's a flight that normally takes an hour. On this particular day, however, it took close to three hours. There was a storm in the area, and the plane had to be rerouted twice to fly around it.

From the moment the plane took off, Rosie had the feeling that it was going to be an unusual flight, so she began to pray. As the plane repeatedly ran into turbulence, she started praying harder. Finally, as the pilot began trying to fly around the storm, Rosie began to have some really serious conversations with the Lord.

The flight attendants had not been able to serve beverages for the first two hours. When the turbulence subsided, they began to serve. They had only served about six rows when the FASTEN SEAT BELTS signs came on and the pilot instructed the flight attendants to be seated immediately. "Within five minutes we hit something extremely hard," Rosie said, "and the water glasses and beverages began to fly everywhere. People were really shaken up. I asked the Lord to take care of the family if I didn't make it."

"Then I felt the Lord telling me, 'Look at your hands. What do you see?' My hands were pressed together, with the fingers interlocked tightly and the right thumb pressed down over the left. When I looked down, I saw my thumbs formed a cross. Then I felt the Lord saying, "Whenever the turbulence gets so heavy that you think you can't go on, just look to the cross.'"

When the plane finally landed, Rosie's hands were still clasped together, and her eyes were on the cross.

Jesus, in good times and hard times, let me look to Your Cross and lay all my cares on You.
