Praying in the Storm Study
2 Chronicles 20

  1. What do you do when you're suddenly in the path of a tornado? (You pray in desparation and beg God to spare you and your family - you cry for mercy!)

  2. What "storm" was Jehoshaphat facing? ((v 2)A vast army against which there was no military defense.)

  3. How did Jehoshaphat respond? (He didn't take any time consulting his generals. He went right to God.)

  4. What can we learn from Jehoshaphat?

    1. Measure the storm by the character and promises of God. (Focus on God's power and attributes. (v6) This dwarfs the storm.
Focus on God's promises. (v 7-9) This helps ride out the storm in confidence.)

    2. Demonstrate helpless dependence on God. (Jehoshaphat knew that God was the only hope, all of Judah did this. (v 12-13) Corporate prayer, fasting and confession allow us to say, while the storm rages around us, that our hope is in You Lord. Only You.)

    3. Wait for God to communicate. (While the enemy army drew nearer, all of Judah stood before the Lord, they simply waited. (v 13)
God spoke through Jahaziel and comforted the people and gave instructions. (v 14-17))

    4. Respond with courageous obedience. (Rather than face the army with their best soldiers Jehoshaphat appointed men to praise. (v 21) Praise is the ultimate expression of trust, it says that God is bigger than any storm.)

    5. Expect God's best. (God not only saved Judah, it was blessed. (v25))
