  1. How is God’s power described in the following verses?

    Psalm 33:6–11     By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.

    Psalm 135:5–6     I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.

    Jer 32:27     "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?

    Amos 4:13     He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth-- the LORD God Almighty is his name.

    Eph 1:19–21     and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

    Heb 1:3     The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

  3. Reflect on some of the numerous Bible accounts of God’s power (e.g., God parting the Red Sea in Exodus 14, Jesus stilling the storm in Mark 4:35-41, Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead in John 11, and so on). Which is your favorite?

  4. What about that particular account of God’s power speaks to your own need for spiritual power in your life?

  5. Many times our minds know that our God is powerful, but our outward lives do not demonstrate that power. Have you ever doubted that God’s power was really at work in your life? If so, describe the circumstances that feed that doubt.

  6. Review the verse from 1. Write it out here. Why did you choose this verse?

  7. How might the truth of this verse help you overcome your doubts about the presence of God’s power in your life?

  8. How can you use what you’ve learned in this study to encourage someone you know who lacks confidence in God’s ability and power?

  9. Ask God to open your eyes to areas in your life where He exhibits His power. Pray for increasing assurance that God’s power is truly at work on your behalf. The following are verses you can pray for yourself and others.

    Eph 1:17–20     I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

    Eph 3:16–21     I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

    Col. 1:10–11     And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience

    2 Thes. 1:11     With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.
