WE'RE ON A MISSION FROM GOD!

Did you ever see the old movie "Blues Brothers"? Remember how Belushi and Akyroid thought they were on a "mission from God"? Today, we look at the real deal! All week, we're going to read the Matthew 28 verses each day. Again, read them aloud, before you read the additional scriptures.

Matthew 28:16-20 (New Living Translation)
Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped himbut some of them still doubted!

Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Matthew 16:24-26 (New Living Translation)
Then Jesus said to the disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life. And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?

2 Corinthians 5:13-20 (New Living Translation)
If it seems that we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit. Whatever we do, it is because Christ's love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for everyone, we also believe that we have all died to the old life we used to live. He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live to please themselves. Instead, they will live to please Christ, who died and was raised for them.

So we have stopped evaluating others by what the world thinks about them. Once I mistakenly thought of Christ that way, as though he were merely a human being. How differently I think about him now! What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!

All this newness of life is from God, who brought us back to himself through what Christ did. And God has given us the task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others. We are Christ's ambassadors, and God is using us to speak to you. We urge you, as though Christ himself were here pleading with you, "Be reconciled to God!"

2 Tim 2:2 (New Living Translation)
You have heard me teach many things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Teach these great truths to trustworthy people who are able to pass them on to others.

THINK!

  1. What is the "mission" for anyone who wants to be a disciple for Jesus Christ?

  2. The "mission" is simply "to be and make disciples". On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current progress? Why?

  3. From the verses you read earlier, why would a genuine disciple of Jesus be....
    . . a (foolish) follower? Matthew 16:24-26
    . . . a (maniac) messenger? 2 Corinthians 5:13-20a
    . . . a (tough) teacher? 2 Timothy 2:2

PRAY!

Being "on the mission from God" is not only right--it is the greatest adventure in life! Ask God to reaffirm this truth in your life and show you how to apply these scriptures.
