Karen always orders the best things
On Wednesday we travelled to Assisi , where St. Francis lived in the 13th century.  We found lunch in a grocery store on the way and ate it in the car.  It was surprisingly delicious.  We parked near the top of Assisi and took Rick Steves' recommended walking tour which gradually headed downhill.  The town had an interesting church in the middle built on top of the Roman Temple of Minerva.  The Roman columns and floor were integrated into the church.  We ended up at the magnificent St. Francis Basilica, built just years after his death.  Afterwards we hiked back up to the center of town.  As some of our group shopped Ralph's Dad made his way up the hill.  It was quite a challenge for him.  As soon as he got there, the free shuttle bus came zooming by.  He just smiled and said "Well, I just kept going" and the kids called him the "Little Grandad That Could." We had a fantastic dinner in Assisi and then a crazy taxi ride through the narrow streets back up to our car.

On Thursday, we travelled to Siena, parking at the soccer stadium.  We had lunch on the famous Piazza del Campo. We visited Siena's Duomo and Baptistry.  There were a lot of stairs in Siena and the rooftops were earthtone brown color (i.e. Burnt Sienna).  On the way back we stopped at the lakefront town of Castiglione del Lago and ate at the Monna Lisa restaurant and enjoyed a fabulous meal and very friendly staff.
