It was quite moving to visit the Normandy D-Day battlefields and monuments. It really brought home the sacrifice that so many made for freedom. Pointe du Hoc still bears the scars from the battle as one can walk down into blast craters that are well over twice your heighth. Omaha Beach is now a recreational beach save a few museums and a couple of monuments including a modern work of commerative art. The kids played on Omaha Beach while 3 of the adults toured the nearby American Cemetary. The American Cemetary was very moving. It provides a very fitting setting and tribute to the Americans who gave their lives during D-Day and the related battles during the allied invasion of occupied France. At Arromanches we saw the remains of the artificial harbors created to allow materiel to be brought to shore. A museum we visited was Arromanches 360. It was in the round and provided exceptional filmclips from D-Day. |
