Brugge, Belgium
Taking a canal boat tour of the city gives you a different perspective as you travel under low bridges and right next to buildings.  We enjoyed walking through the streets as well.  The city's architecture, including the stepped gables, was a treat for the eyes.  It felt as if we had stepped back in time.
We actually drove into this historic city through one these city gates, crossing a moat-like canal first.
The steeple is the Church of Our Lady's, which is home to a sculpture by Michelangelo, Madonna and Child.  This steeple and the Belfry tower on the Market Square dominate the skyline.
These former guild houses form one side of the central Market Square.  We were in town for Market day and enjoyed fresh produce and breads on the drive back to Holland.

Of course we had to have Belgium waffles!!!  While in town we also learned about (and purchased) chocolate and lace.

Many people go to Brugge as a day trip.  We stayed overnight in a local
B&B which allowed us to enjoy the city at night.  It was beautiful with lights on the bridges, buildings and towers.
