A sakura tree near Tokyo University (Todai). I wrote an entry about sakura before I left. Basically, they are one of the major symbols of Japan. And, according to a couple in Nagano, my understanding of sakura shows my deep understanding of Japan. ok, it's a compliment. I'll take it. ;) But if I did really see one thing through sakura, it's mono no aware, beauty through tragedy (not a literal translation), a Japanese literary concept. Anyone who faithfully read my journal knows that I love sakura. In fact, I am thinking of growing my own sakura tree. As an added bonus, University of Illinois has a Japanese garden with a sakura tree! Come every spring, I'll be having my own hanami parties!
