Kakunodate, a small, well-preserved town in Akita-ken. Anyone who read my journal knows that Kakunodate was one of my favorite discoveries in Japan. This small Tohoku town is home to some well preserved samurai houses, a lovely onsen, and really friendly people. Too bad I wasn't there for the Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom fest.), but according to one of the shopkeepers, the sakura don't bloom in Kakunodate until the end of April. That's how far north it is.
