Abortion: Should be legal in all cases. Perhaps the one issue that I would die for is the issue of choice. Women (not the government) should have the right to determine what goes on in their bodies. I am pro-choice. I am 100% aganist forcing women to have abortions. But the option of a safe and legal abortion should be open to all women. Before Roe v Wade, many women died or became infected due to back alley abortions. The fact is, women who want to terminate their pregnancies will do it whether the law permits it or not. Illegalizing abortion won't stop women from having abortions. It will stop women from having safe abortions. If we truly care about the welfare of the women in this country, we will work to keep abortion a safe and legal choice. We will continue to work to prevent women from having abortions by teaching comprehensive (not abstainitive) sex education (to both women and men) and by giving women (and men!) access to birth control. Please note that I am really passionate about the abortion issue. This is not something that my parents, politicians, or my friends told me to believe. This is by far my #1 issue and I would practically die to ensure that abortion remains a safe and legal choice. For more of my views about abortion, please see my Abortion Rights Page. Also note that from now on (3/9/01) all pointless, obnoxious, and insulting comments left by anti-choicers in my guestbook will be deleted. You have your opinion. I have mine. I would never throw a list of degrading names in your face.
Feminism: I am a feminist. The basic goal of feminism is equality of the sexes. Feminism is not about hating men. And not all feminists are lesbians. Feminism is extremely important to our society, and should be supported by all people, because there are still so many injustices against women. For example, women are not paid equally for equal work (a woman makes about 73 cents to a man's dollar). Anyone who does not see an injustice with that is obviously not for equality. We need stronger rape and domestic violence laws to protect women. In some parts of this world, it is still legal for a man to rape his wife, or for a woman to be executed for being raped (since she was "cheating" on her husband). This needs to stop. Women are not disposable objects. Women deserve full equality in all spheres of life.
Gay/Lesbian Issues: Homosexuality is not a disease. It is natural and biological. I support equal rights for gay/bisexual/lesbian people. These rights include marriage rights, adoption rights, equal employment rights, etc. I also support putting sexual orientation into our national hate crimes legislation. There is no excuse for any violence aganist anyone based on their sexual orientation.
The Death Penalty: I am aganist it. Our society is not centered around "an eye for an eye." We do not cut of theives' hands. We should not kill people who have killed. There is way too much room for error as capital punishment is irreversable. And the death penalty is racist and classist. "If you have the capital, you won't get the punishment," is a true statement. Instead of focusing on killing our criminals, why not invest our resources in preventing crime in the first place? Most "first world" nations have abolished capital punishment. Instead of condemning countries in the Middle East and Africa for their "barbaric" and "primative" practices, we should set an example by abolishing cappital punishment in the United States.
Racism: Is stupid. Look at the person, not at the color of their skin. I believe in equal rights for all. There is not one race that is superior. Qualified people can hold any job, regardless of the color of their skin. Interracial marriages and friendship are quite cool, and are an important step to understanding how cool diversity is.
Gun Control: I am for it. There is really no reason that a citizen should own a handgun, or have access to bullets that have no other purpose than to kill people. This country would be much safer if people didn't have easy access to guns.
Wars: Are also stupid. War should be the absolute last solution. Whatever happened to negotiation?
Education: Is a right. Instead of investing our money into the military, why not invest it in education? All schools should receive the same amount of funding.
The Environment: Is more important than big corporations. There is no excuse to pollute our air, chop down our forests, and throw shit into our waters. We need to perserve this beautiful Earth for future generations.
Animal Rights: I do not believe in wearing fur. I do not think that testing cosemetics and household products on animals is right. I do however support some (but not all) medical testing on animals. I am a vegetarian, but I believe that vegetarianism (like abortion) is a choice.
Religion: I do not believe in a single, male god. And I do not believe that one religion is better, or more vaild, than any other. If people choose to have religion in their lives, I can totally respect that. However I can not respect people using their religion as a weapon of hatred. And I have no respect for people who believe that their religion is the religion, secpecially people who go abroad and try to convert people who hold on to their native beliefs. I am also a strong advocate of seperation of church and state.
Human Rights: All humans deserve basic human rights, regardless of ethniciti, nationality, sex, race, religion, age, disability, or sexual orientation. These rights are outlined in the UN's International Declearation of Human Rights.
Big Business: I usually hate it. Support your local businesses. Big business is making the world look the same. Boring. I also hate how the politicians seem to be at the mercy of big businesses.
The Electoral College: Abolish it. Everyone's vote should be equal.
Marijuana: Should be legal. And of course, there should be consequences for driving under the influence. But if cigarettes are legal, then marijuana should be as well.
The World Bank and the IMF: Yuck. Gives too much power to the "big" nations.
Nuclear Weapons: Are disgusting. All countries need to sign a real treaty never to use such force aganist another nation. After seeing the devestation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I truly believe that today's nuclear weapons can destroy the world. With one touch of a button.
Yes, I am opinionated. Those are just a few of my beliefs.
