| Statistics *In the United States there are approximately twenty-eight million deaf or hard of hearing people. Of these, about 90% of them have children who have no apparent hearing problems. The American Deaf community was formed in the early 1800s when Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet established the first public deaf school in the United States, located in Hartford, Connecticut. This school was first called the Connecticut Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb Persons, but was later rightly named, the American School for the Deaf. Set Backs *Most Deaf parents spend a majority of their youth trying to place themselves in the hearing world. Because of this they may feel left out of the conventional form of language and culture which belongs to their children. They have difficulities placing themselves in the Deaf world because it is considered to be an antiestablishment of limited subculture. There are no primary deaf neighborhoods with which they could segregate themselves. *Much of this information is recieved from researcher Jenny Singleton |
