Confidence is belief in your abilities, having full faith in what you do, and presume it to be perfectly right. This is good and has a great potential, if you have thoroughly studied the situation you are going to handle. If you are sure about things which you are capable of supporting without losing faith then it is your confidence. But when you take up things lightly without giving it a deep thought, make insincere claim for a particular situation, then it is unskillful and has absolutely no potential. This is over confidence which can make you face disappointment.
Let us take the case of a twelfth class student who is appearing in his final exam for mathematics. Throughout the year he reads mathematics like a fiction, attempting solved examples and not the questions given in the book. Solving question practically teaches students the basic and important steps to deal with difficult situations and to understand the down-to-earth impediments. After coming from the examination hall such students feel afraid even to consult their friends for the doubtful answers of some questions, fearing negative emotions to invade their mind. After the examination is over they await the result with baited breath. Ultimately when the result is out something awful could be in store for them for which they had created a temporary emotional place in their mind to keep things undetected.
If the students study seriously and regularly the result would have been to their preference, encouraging them to think correctly and to move on with firmness without any uncertainty in their mind. Over confident people get pulled-down which can prove dangerous to their existence. In the case of stock market, where people invest lot of money thinking to multiply it usually end up in losing their assets, which they wanted to fall back upon. Buying stocks doesnt link with IQ, but to learn from dozens of past mistakes people make in investing their hard earned money. The reason lies in the over assessment of their natural ability, which lands them into trouble. What people need is the dominant quality of mind to control their excitement, which may not trouble them later.
Let us study IPL 20 which is a league of privately owned franchises, an autonomous body working under BCCI, and is having a separate budget to deal with. The controversy started when Lalit Modi tweeted the names of stake-holders, which was a breach of confidence. The matter reached Parliament where some high-ups were involved in the controversy. The scam in IPL came to light, but the Ministers were so important in UPA that action against them by the Government was not possible, fearing the Government to put to mat. The investigations are still on but nothing more is likely to happen except Mr. Shashi Tharoor lost the post of a Minister and Modi was dismissed as the commissioner of IPL, and later came under scanner of enquiry by the BCCI.
The opposition ignited the spark and it went full blown involving several high ups in the scam. As per media hype Modi was declared a culprit who didnt visualize the future developments, encouraged close relations to fill their kitty, fudging books, hiding the reality, which was not fair provided the whole findings of the media were true. The conscience of the overconfident Modi compelled him to take greater risk and ultimately he landed himself into trouble. Why it all happened? This is because most of the things were kept secret and were not independent of Mr. Modi, which led to uproar and disaster. Nobody amongst the BCCI stalwarts advised Modi to remain transparent, and now when he is in a fix they want to save their skin revealing he acted like a dictator. Modi did everything in over confidence, rather surreptitiously, which led to his fall from the apex, though he brought money and glory to India. Some interested persons who kept quiet were either grinding their own axe or were under some pressure. The enquiry which is ongoing will disclose subsequently.
Confidence is good but over confidence is appalling. An over confident man is liable to take great risks, which are beyond his capacity to overcome. Risks which confront hard truths, spill over in full force, and bring untold misery in the life of over confident people. There is much difference between the emotions of young and old people. Young persons have tremendous energy to act in haste, but the old people with lot of experience take only calculated risk which is within their capacity to bear. Those who are not greedy and have a clean slate remain transparent, balance their opinion without falling prey to their anxieties, and usually have a smooth sailing. They dont hide things and their dealings remain perfectly transparent. Younger generation believe that if anybody wants to know the art of swimming he or she will have to jump in the pond. That is right but jumping should be in the presence of experts, who can save them from drowning. The gravity of risk becomes less, their confidence increases and they get success in their mission.
Transparency is conducive to confidence, but secrecy without visualizing the turn it may take is over confidence. Defiant behaviour can bring guys down to earth, and such people lack the chastity of dignity and gentleness. They are always afraid to discuss their flaws either in their own character or in the organizations to which they defend against criticism. Their existence is rough and disagreeable, and they cant remain in peace unless they change their course by giving it a deep thought, making it favorable and skilful. Confidence creates an environment where individual is answerable to society with his clean image and every solitary move. He must confirm balanced responsibility and transparent actions to prove his worth of confidence. Over confident persons overestimate their abilities and face hazardous consequences.
