YAADEIN

The countdown is over and all the brouhaha surrounding Subhash Ghais latest release, the Hrithik-Kareena starrer Yaadein, is beginning to subside. The film, obviously over-hyped, is turning out to be disappointing fare at the box-office.

At its center is the character Raj Singh Puri (Jackie Shroff), a doting father but an unfortunate husband. Having lost his wife Nalini (Rati Agnihotri) in a terrible accident, he is left with the responsibility of fending for his three daughters Avantika (Avni Vasa), Sanya (Himani Rawat) and Isha (Kareena). They are a middle class family living in the heart of London.

Parallel to it is another quintessentially NRI family, friends to Puris, a little-better-off Malhotras (friends to Puris) with J.K. Malhotra (Amrish Puri) being the patriarchal head of the family. And between these families sprouts a touching love story -- between the handsome Malhotra grandson Ronit (Hrithik) and the youngest of the three Puri daughters Isha (Kareena) to be precise..

There is a bond of friendship between the two families, especially between Ronit and Puri family. Ronit finds solace in the loving and caring milieu of Puri household to get over the money-minded attitude of his own khaandaan. However, J.K.Malhotras we-are-better-off-than-you egotism drives a rift between the two families.

But Ronit and Isha are inseparable. Childhood friends become lovers when Ronit saves her from a sure-death on a crocodile-ridden island. And then, as every hackneyed Indian love story goes, both of them swear to bring their families together.

Subhash Ghai could have had a potboiler on his hands had he tilted the balance of the story more in favor of the young lovers rather than dabbling for so long on Rajs (Jackie Shroffs) character. Thats why the film is being hailed as Jackie Shroffs film. Subhash Ghai has said that Jackies role in the film is the father of all the roles he has done so far.

As far as performances go, Hrithik is once again his cute self before the camera and Kareena shows promises of a good actress. Two new girls Avni Vasa and Himani Rawat look as good and glamorous as willowy Kareena. Films music, by Anu Malik, is good in patches and lyrics by Anand Bakshi are strewn with poetic lingo.
