Kosaku Matsumora

    Matsumora is probable the most noteworthy karate-ka from Tomari Village. Matsumora inherited the Tomari-te style from his father, and was the first in his family to teach to a student outside of the family. This allowed for the expansion and development of Tomari-te. Matsumora also studied under Karate Sakugawa and is said to have been one of his top students. It is also said that Matsumora trained with Chinto, a Chinese merchant that had shipwrecked on Okinawa. Matsumora didn’t ever have a tradition dojo, or training hall. Instead, he trained all students in the backyard of his home. Matsumora’s most famous students include, Choki Motobu, Chotoku Kiyan, Koha Kojo, and Koho Kuba.

Kata practiced by Matsumora:  Naihanchi, Passai, Chinto, Gojushiho, Kusanku, Wansu, Wankan, Rohai, Jiin, Jion, and Jutte.
