Chosin Chibana

       Master Chibana was the founder of the Kobayashi branch of Shorin-Ryu. Chibana started his karate training under Itosu. He began training at the age of fifteen. He trained with Itosu under he died in 1915. After the death of his Master, Chibana moved to Naha, for some time and taught in his own dojo. After some time he returned to Shuri and opened up a new dojo. He also spent four years teaching the Shuri Police Department. Master Chibana was the first president of the Okinawan Karate-Do Federation, when it was formed in 1956. After working with the Okinawan Karate Federation for five years, Master Chibana broke away from the organization, and formed the Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate Kyokai. He worked with this organization until his death in 1969. Among Master Chibana’s students were Katsuya Miyahara, Kangi Teruya, Chozo Nakama, and Shugoro Nakazato (who was named Master Chibana’s successor).
