Child-killer
'wants to marry in prison'
May
21, 2001
Child-killer
Beverley Allitt wants to marry her "vampire" boyfriend in
a prison chapel, it has been reported. Former nurse Allitt, 31, was
given 13 life sentences for murdering four children and attempting
to murder nine others in her care.
She
has reportedly asked to wed Mark Heggie, 34, in St Francis Chapel of
Rampton Hospital, Retford, Nottinghamshire.
Former
slaughterhouse worker Heggie was sent to Rampton in 1992 after
attacking 63-year-old Alison Da Costa in Golders Green, London, and
then drinking her blood. And Allitt was sent to Rampton in
1993 after being found guilty of the murders at Grantham and
Kesteven Hospital, Lincolnshire. Her victims ranged from a
seven-week-old baby to an 11-year-old child.
Allitt,
who is being held indefinitely at Rampton, is said to have set her
heart on a traditional white bridal gown and a wedding cake.

Mark
Fuhrman Book Infuriates Police
Saturday,
May 19, 2001; 8:21 p.m. EDT
SPOKANE,
Wash. Former Detective Mark Fuhrman has written a new
true-crime book accusing Spokane police of bungling a murder
investigation, an allegation they hotly deny.
In
"Murder in Spokane: Catching a Serial Killer," to be
released Tuesday, Fuhrman contends serial killer Robert L. Yates
could have been caught two years earlier if police had relied less
on technology and more on footwork and intuition.
Yates,
who has confessed to killing 14 people, was arrested in April 2000.
The
book drew protests from the two police agencies whose members
comprised the serial killer task force.
"We're
proud of the fact that we caught our killer ... and Mark
didn't," said Spokane County sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Dave
Reagan. "And we don't want to help him sell his book."
Sheriff
Mark Sterk said Fuhrman had no access to law enforcement files or
crime scenes.
"How
do you write a factual book when you don't have information?"
he asked. "This is all about making money for Mark Fuhrman,
nothing else."

Zodiac
killer may be identified soon, newspaper reports
SAN
FRANCISCO (AP) -- DNA evidence may be about to reveal the identity
of the notorious Zodiac killer, solving a case that has baffled
police for more than three decades, a newspaper reported Friday.
The
San Francisco Examiner said saliva on envelopes containing taunting
letters from the killer is being matched with samples from one of
the key suspects in the case, which dates back to the 1960s.
The
man in question is Arthur Leigh Allen, a former Vallejo school
teacher who died in 1992.
Leigh
"is a primary suspect in the case, but that's all he is,"
said Lt. JoAnn West, a spokeswoman for the Vallejo police and also
for an intercity task force set up in 1998 to continue the
investigation.
West
wouldn't say if DNA from other suspects was being compared with the
sample from the envelope.
The
Zodiac spawned a trail of terror in the San Francisco Bay area in
1968 and 1969. He claimed 37 killings, though officials lay six Bay
Area slayings at his feet.
The
killer helped fan the fear by writing 21 letters to the Examiner,
the San Francisco Chronicle and the Vallejo Times-Herald, providing
details about the crimes that only he could have known. They all
started with the chilling greeting, "This is the Zodiac
speaking."
Investigators
long felt Allen was the killer, but at the time had no way to use
the DNA evidence they collected.

Reviled
Ng lives quietly on death row
May
11, 2001
Very
little has happened to Charles Ng since June 30, 1999, the day he
was sentenced in an Orange County courtroom to die for 11 Calaveras
County murders -- and that's the way corrections officials want it
until Ng is executed years from now. Ng's address these days is
Death Row, San Quentin, CA 94964. It is a place where the guards
take extra pains to make sure nothing does happen. In Ng's case,
that is the big problem, because even among condemned killers Ng is
a pariah. He is so loathed he might have to be concerned about his
own safety if the state weren't taking such care to see that he
lives long enough to receive his just deserts. Evidence against Ng
included videotapes of him and accomplice Leonard Lake tormenting
women whom they were accused of murdering. Lake swallowed a suicide
pill just as he was being arrested even before the case came to
light.

Crown
charges McGray with new murder
May
7, 2001
MONCTON,
N.B. (CP) -- Crown attorneys have resurrected a charge of
first-degree murder against serial killer Michael McGray. The
Crown alleges McGray killed 11-year-old Nina Hicks after he killed
her mother, Joan Hicks, in their apartment in Moncton in 1998.
McGray pleaded guilty a year ago to slitting the mother's
throat, but has always insisted he did not kill the young girl, who
was found in a closet in the apartment.

Look at Serial Killer 'Ed Gein'
The
tortured life of a Wisconsin murderer is told in an awkward,
under-inspired fashion.
By
KEVIN THOMAS, Times Staff Writer
http://www.latimes.com/print/calendar/20010504/t000000004.html
"Ed
Gein" is as plain as its title, which will strike revulsion in
the hearts and minds of anyone who remembers that this is the name
of the lonely 51-year-old Wisconsin farmer, whose murder of a woman
in his tiny town of Plainfield in 1957 revealed a schizophrenic who
carried necrophilia and cannibalism to such extremes he inspired
"Psycho," "The Texas Chainsaw Murders" and the
Jame Gumb-Buffalo Bill character in "The Silence of the
Lambs"--among some 40 other movies.
Written
by Stephen Johnston, who has stuck relatively close to the facts,
"Ed Gein" was directed by Chuck Parello, the director of
the not-bad, if redundant "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer,
Part II." Steve Railsback, who has played Charles Manson to
acclaim, is a most convincing Ed Gein, whom he somewhat resembles
physically.
As
the film portrays him, Ed Gein never had a chance. He was born of a
brutal father and an abusive, religious-fanatic mother (Carrie
Snodgress), who insists that all women, herself presumably excepted,
are whores and that sex is dirty. Unlike his older brother, who saw
their mother as a crazy shrew, Ed believed her to be a disciple of
God and loved her deeply, no matter how badly she treated him.
Clearly, not overly intelligent to start with, Ed began
disintegrating mentally upon her death in 1945.
Serial
killer shipped back to Wisconsin
Published
Wednesday, May 2, 2001
WAUPUN,
Wis. (AP) -- Minnesota prison authorities have quietly returned a
serial killer to Wisconsin, although his attorney traded his
confessions for a guarantee he would be held out of state.
Minnesota
corrections officials said Tuesday they shipped David Spanbauer to
the Dodge Correctional Institution in October.
Spanbauer,
a paroled sex offender, was captured in 1994 and confessed to
abduction killings of two children and the murder of an Appleton
woman in her home.
He
was convicted of killing 10-year-old Ronelle Eichstadt of Ripon in
1992, 12-year-old Cora Jones of Weyauwega in 1994 and 21-year-old
Trudi Jeschke of Appleton, also in 1994.

Shipman
quizzed over more deaths
Tuesday,
1 May, 2001, 15:57 GMT 16:57 UK
Convicted
serial killer Harold Shipman has been interviewed over a further
nine suspicious deaths which happened during his time as a GP,
police have said. The deaths occurred in Todmorden, West
Yorkshire, between 1974 and 1975. He was questioned for 30
hours at Halifax police station in West Yorkshire and later returned
to Frankland Prison near Durham. In January a new
investigation was launched into whether the former family doctor had
carried out other murders. The inquiry followed a report that he may
have killed more than 200 patients during his 24-year career.
