| This was my first semester back in school after being out of high school for a few years. Being back in school has been a huge adjustment for not only me but for my family as well. The past couple months have been quite a challenging job trying to juggle a home, kids, and academics. I had to find a way to deal with all the daily activities while staying focused on what is important to me, which is finishing college and keeping my family happy. Daily habits such as being prepared, a daily/weekly planner, participating in class, and maintaining a positive attitude are what has helped me through my first semester in college with confidence and success. | |||||||||||||||
| Starting school with good habits is extremely helpful not only for classes but you can bring the habits you start into your personal life and into your future. Before classes started, I made it a point to get all my books and supplies together so that I would be well prepared. I also walked around the campus to find where the classrooms where located and planned the route to get me to all of them on time. For the first week of school I left the house 15 minutes early to get into the habit of not being late, which I have stuck with all semester and have not been late for any of my classes. | |||||||||||||||
| Another beneficial habit useful is the use of a daily/weekly planner which can used to write all assignments, tests, and any appointments you may have. Always remember to allow time for studying and time to be with your family or friends. If you want to go out to dinner with friends or family you can block a time in your planner which would help keep track of how you are spending your time. | |||||||||||||||
| In many classes participation counts toward your final grades, so don't be afraid to join in. I made a point to sit in the front rows of all my classes, where I was able to hear the professors better and wouldn't be tempted to get distracted. Being an active participant has also helped me to stay prepared for class. Reading chapters ahead of the lectures helped with taking better notes and understanding what the professors where explaining during class lectures and discussing. | |||||||||||||||
| The best strategy for academic confidence and self-acceptance is staying positive. A great positive attitude will help you get through the hard times in and out of school. Staying positive will not only help your self-esteem but, lower your anxiety levels, and contribute to good personal relationships. So many people waste their time feeling sorry for a bad test grade or lower then expected grade on a paper. Remember we are in control, whether we know it or not. | |||||||||||||||
| A self-confident person can be defined as trusting their own abilities, having a general sense of control in their lives, and believing that, within reason, they will be able to do what they wish, plan, and expect. College is a stepping stone for your life success, and success requires making a plan and sticking to it. | |||||||||||||||
