HARIKE WETLAND is situated in Punjab (India). It is one of the six wet-lands in India under RAMSAR Convention. It came into being in 1952 as a result of construction of barrage at the confluence of BEAS and SUTLEJ Rivers.HARIKE WETLAND has a strategic position for the birds migrating to and from their breeding grounds from Central Asia and Siberia. Of the open water area of 17~18 Kms, about 8~10 Kms is infested with WATER HYACINTH (EICHHORNIA CRASSIPES). This ecological crisis has pushed HARIKE, virtually to a point for disaster to happen in respect of variety of rare and endangered species of birds and animals.
