1.    Harike Lake has several attributes that justify its privileged status as a Wetland of International Importance or a Ramsar Site (1990).

 

2.    The wetland plays a major role in maintaining the hydrological balance in the catchment of the Sutle and Beas River systems.

 

3.    It supports rare, vulnerable and endangered faunal species which include the testudine turtle (Gleoclemys hamiltonii) and the smooth Indian otter (Lutra perspicillata), both of which are listed in the IUCN Redlist of Threatened Animals.

 

4.    Harike attracts large populations of avifauna, in particular diving ducks. The scaup duck (Anas falcata) and the whiteheaded stifftailed duck (oxyura leucocephala) are species rarely seen elese-where within India.

 

5.    It is a vital source of water and fish for the people of Punjab.
