The Book of Zechariah

A Bible study

Note: Due to some problems with HTML this study has been revised in July 2001.

Introduction:
The book of Zechariah gives an overvieuw of the plans Yahuweh has with Israel from the return from the Babylonian exile till the ultimate restoration of Israel These prophetic revelations are very relevant to us in our time, because we are in the midst of it.

This study is from the Hebrew text of the Tanakh, erroneously called by some people the Old Testament.
My translation is based on the context. I shall try to attain the Hebrew sentence construction as much as possible. This may not be a proper English construction but is keeping closer to the original text.
It might seem somewhat strange in the beginning but after a while it might start to make more sense.
The translations that attempt to translate according to what they think to be the proper English sentences, sometimes lose the deeper meaning of a Text.
In Hebrew the subject of the verbs is clear from the text. This might not be in English and therefore I shall sometimes put things between (parentheses) that are not in the Hebrew text, but make the English text clearer.
To read the Hebrew Tanakh you have to start thinking in Hebrew, because translating it first in your mind is confusing.
To be able to communicate the texts, You have to understand the Hebrew text in the Hebrew and then translate your thoughts in English.

The need to work from the Hebrew text, comes from the fact that all most all translations are based on the man made decision to alter the word of Yahuweh. This is contrary to the word of Yahuweh in Deuteronomy 4:2. They have taken it upon themselves to change the Name Yahuweh (YHVH), to a title used by Pagans to address their Idols. The Holy name of which Yahuweh has said that we have to remember Him by, is ignored because of human philosophy.

In this study I have not made a referrence to any existing commentary, I have only concentrated on the Hebrew text of the Tanakh.

To find out where the text deals with, we have first to examine the context. After this we can start looking at more details in the text.In some cases you may find a word in red moving the mouse pointer over the word in red will introduce a message window with some more information on the word in red.
The book begins about 16 years after the return of the exiles who returned by the decree of Cyrus, from the lands they were exiled to.
The building of the Temple was started at the time of that first return, but the temple was not finished until Zecharyah's time. Zechariah was a contemporary of Haggai see Ezra 5:1 both of them told the people to finish the restoration of the Temple. Zechariah warns the people not to turn away from Yahuweh as their fathers did.
He prophesies about Israel's future. Parts of his prophecies have come about but some of them have still to be fulfilled for 100%. This makes the book interesting for us because the 100% fulfilment still has to come. I will use the names as they are transliterated from the Hebrew in English.
I use the Jewish dating and use BCE Before Common Era and CE Common Era to indicate the other calendar era.
